Do colours matter?

Recommended Posts

For Christmas I am getting two new POL hens to go with my 2 silver sussexs. However I wanted a Bluebelle and a Light Sussex however I was advised not to get a light coloured hen as she would not mix well with three dark coloured hens.

What do you think? Has anyone introduced a light hen with three darker hens???

Thanks

Tom

PPPP(Bluebelle) + (white chicken) = :P or

Yes I have! A light sussex, silver sussex and a grey maran to two pepperpots. The theory is that the 'old' chickens won't recognise the new ones if they are the same colour :?:?

Rubbish if you ask me. I don't think the colours matter in the slightest personally. They still realise that they are 'strangers':wink:

Don't have masses of experience but was told that a black hen would not be bullied - but my Iggy was the scaredy cat of the 4 and she was the only black one - and the white one held her own against the big ones from day one - I reckon it's an old wives' tale, but will of course bow to greater experience if proved wrong! :D

I introduced an amber star to my pepperpot and gingernut - it all worked out well and they all live harmoniously together!

I'm not actually sure if my chickens know what colour they are themselves??!! I don't think they would be fooled regardless of the colour, they will notice the new ones and be equally unhappy about it whatever colour they are!

The colour of other hens does not seem to make any difference at least to mine

but obviously food colours do

I usually give my girls gala apples red/green but OH was given some

of the Big Red (snow white type  ) apples at work when I rolled one into there fenced area they all looked horrified and ran as though I had rolled a grenade in :lol: I wish I had been filming them I shouldn't laugh but it was so unexpected and very funny :lol:
