Clur
Back in May I was hospitalised with viral meningitis and ever since I've been having problems with my speech when I get tired - I stutter and stammer and my speech can sound slightly slurred. Also over the past couple of months my short-term memory has been appalling. I am having blood tests tomorrow to rule out (or in) any other medical problems, but I and remember some people on the forum saying they'd been knocked for six with viral meningitis and I wondered if anyone suffered the same sort of thing afterwards. If so, did it take long for it to wear off or was other treatment necessary? It's getting me down a bit and knocking my confidence.
Egluntyne
I had viral meningitis as a teenager. I had memory and concentration problems for about a year afterwards.....which seemed like forever at the time, but it did a resolve. I also was a bit stuttery and stammery too, especially when tired or upset/excited. I also tended to have a bit of a squint and double vision late in the day when tired. It did all settle though. All the best.

earthmam1
Hi clur I had viral meningitis about 18yrs ago and it took me over a year to get over it. The tiredness, lack of concentration, stuttering etc. are all things I remember well. You just have to be kind to yourself and do not rush. I remember having an appointment with my GP just after being discharged from hospital and what would have normally taken me a 5 min walk across the park took nearly an hour. Just go slowly xxxx

I am feeling wrecked and pretty miserable today.

susiepoos
Ditto to everything that has been said - your brain doesn't like to be messed about with and any trauma to it be that viral or surgical procedure knocks it and it takes it quite a while to recover - I should know as it is 2 years nearly to the day since I had a benign brain tumour removed and I still get fatigued really easy. For a good 12 months after the op I couldn't get my words out right and couldn't think straight - it was so frustrating - it was though I knew what I wanted to say but just couldn't say it - the children thought it highly amusing as I'd come out with a word totally unrelated to what I was talking about It will settle but just don't push it - you've been through a really tough time and you will heal, just get yourself plenty of rest and don't push yourself - it's not a race as my Consultant told me!!!!! I have to agree with all the comments thus far. I had viral meningitis 18 years ago when my eldest was just 1 , it took me over a year to get back on my feet. I was off work for about 5 months and ended up going back to live with my mum and dad as my husband was away for a lot of the time and only home at weekends. I remember your symptoms so well. I remember dad trying to take my son and I out to Lyme Park in the car and we had to go home as I couldn't sit up in the car as it made me feel sick. I am never travelsick. Equally YS had a benign brain tumour removed when he was 8 and it took a long time to get him back to 'normal'. I have posted about this elsewhere I think, as he was a different boy afterwards. Give yourself a chance, they reckon it takes upto a year to get back to some sort of normality, and that is without trying to manage a family and busy lifestyle. Clur
Thank you for all your kind comments, it's made me realise I'm not going insane when I ask my husband to hoover the grass instead of mow it etc. I really wish I'd taken more time off but instead I thought I could pull myself together. I went back to work a week after I got out of hospital as I'd started with a new company and had an event to run. I bitterly regret that now and am craving a break as I don't feel I am coping with things very well and when I get stressed I get more confused. Guess I will wait and see what the results are when I go back on the 25th, and once everything else is ruled out I may get some advice as to what to do next. I have put the kybosh on any more overseas travel with work and am sorely tempted to try and find a job more in my local-area (moved from with a 4 hour a day commute, to one 20mins from home...only for them to move into London Best not to ask me for the lottery predictions ). Can't believe you went back to work after a week - incredible no wonder you're struggling - your comment about the grass made me laugh - that's exactly what I'm like!!!!!! - my biggest frustration is people trying to finish my sentences for me You'll probably find your blood results will be OK so don't worry about that - it's probably one of those life changing decisions that you'll have to make and maybe cutting down your working day is a start. Clur
Just a quick update - all my test results came back clear So, it is just post-viral fatigue and if I'm careful, I should be back as right as rain in 3-6 months. Thanks for all your comments and advice, it was really reassuring when I was being a stress-head
