charliechick
Hi guys I keep my run in a fixed place and just at the front it gets abit wet and mushy and even tho i rake it out twice a week i still can't get rid of the mushy wet earth etc. its only near the door and the rest is nice and dry. I use dust free bedding called Med Bedz a type of horse bedding. I was wondering if I could sprinkle any powder at the front to help any bacteria build up etc Charliechick
Ain't Nobody Here
I remove my run every 6 weeks or so and remove the top layer and any soggy bits. I then sprinkle down Stalosan F and garden lime. That should help with sogginess and nasties .
beach chick
I took the lazy option in the last 10 days or so, and just chucked garden lime down - has dried out a treat. I didnt bother to dig it in or anything, because the ingredients are basically ground down limestone so didnt think it would harm the chooks and it hasnt. today I also chucked some diatom down, because they liked the drier earth so much they are now dustbathing inside the run (instead of the remaining wet 12sqm they have inside the elec.fence!) Plum
On the subject of Stalosan F. If you put it in the woodchip is it safe for the chickens to peck at. I also throw food down on woodchip veg and corn etc.,? Thanks
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm fairly sure it's OK. This is what is says on the website: Non-toxic and suitable for use with all livestock. Apply to litter, bedding areas and around feeders / drinkers. It implies it's safe to put down around their food supply.
Plum
Cheers, you are good. Just found a supplier pretty near. They are not smelling or anything, just want to be prepared. Thanks
Egluntyne
Stalosan F is fab stuff, but I reckon your chances of getting the run base "bacteria free" are non existent. It will certainly help dry things out though.
