Puffin
I am sure there have been many posts on this before so forgive me for repetiion. One of my chickens has started laying soft eggs every day, I am not sure which chicken it is - they all seem fine and are eating lots. They have mixed pultry grit available - and I have mixed some in with their mash. They don't get many treats and any (left over pasta or veg) they do get are late afternoon so they are scoffing all their mash. There are quite a few feathers blowing around so I am guessing one of them is moulting although they all look quite reasonable. Any ideas on what else I can do re the soft eggs or if there may be something causing it would be really good. Thanks
Christian
Hello Puffin. Here is some info about soft shelled eggs. Hope she is laying normally soon.
Ain't Nobody Here
Hello Puffin . I'm having exactly the same problem with my Maisie (I know it her because the softies are very pale green!) I've started putting some limestone flour in their pellets along with some baked eggshells and I'm making sure they have plenty of oystershell in their grit pot. I'm hoping she'll be back to normal soon - fingers crossed for yours too .
Puffin
I have now eliminated one of the chickens (Henny) from being the soft egg layer as I saw her lay a perfect brown egg this morning.... the other two seem very happy - whereas on other posts it says they generally look under the weather when laying soft eggs. I do wonder if its Mildred who spends most of her time digging up our flowerbeds after she has escaped under or over the netting - she is the Steve McQueen of chickens... Today there was no soft egg, but no hard ones either... so maybe its a turning point. If things dont improve I shall be investigating a local supplier of limestone flour - is it a petshop thing? Thanks
Ain't Nobody Here
It's something you give tortoises apparently. I got mine from Ebay .
Redwing
I shall be investigating a local supplier of limestone flour - is it a petshop thing? Thanks I saw some in my local agricultural merchant, a small tub in amongst the horse feed supplements.
Hen Watch
I buy my Limestone Flour from the horse feed shop. It's only £4 a tub and you get brands such as Baileys or NAF. This is a picture of what I buy. http://www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk/whatproduct/supplements/lime.htm
Egluntyne
I get mine from a local equestrian shop too. I pay around a fiver I think. You will be surprised at how heavy the tub is!
Puffin
I should be able to get some where I get the chicken food from then as they are mainly an agricultural place. Today I had an egg with a hard shell but it looks really thin but I'm hoping that means the extra grit I have been giving them is starting to take effect!
