My girls were out freeranging the other day and I noticed a little Robin with what I presumed was a death wish. He got closer and closer to Doris as she scratched about... at one point sitting just 2 feet away.

 

Then I realised what he was doing. he had obviously worked out what excellent worm excavators the hens are and was hanging around for left overs. As soon as they finished in an area he was hopping around the freshly dug soil and picking up the bugs they had missed. Very sweet. I just hope he knows not to get too close

 

he was back again yesterday... so today I'm taking the camera out!

Our local Robin actually gets into the run while the girls are out free ranging. I got a bit worried when Fred spotted the Robin and ran into the run to investigate! Fortunately, after a brief panic, the Robin flew past Fred's ear and out the door and away...

Why is it we all have just one garden robin - are they totally intolerant of other robins?

 

Our 'Roddy' the robin appears in the garden as soon as I go out - the other day he was picking worms out of the compost bin which I'd opened to empty the poo tray into.

 

I've really noticed the birds appearing again this week - we had a green woodpecker on the lawn yesterday and this morning a goldfinch. Lovely!

Robins are very territorial.

I remember a nature programme once on tele where they had a stuffed robin perched in the garden and the resident bird tore it apart!!!

Having said that, there are five in my garden, all getting on so I presume they are this years babies.

My resident robin often goes into the run and tidies the floor.

 

I love to see him dithering on the poles of the Omlet netting.

OOh we have a resident robin too that likes to hop around after the chickens and goes in the run. In the summer we had a pair of blackbirds that used to go in the run and eat the layers pellets!

when I put out mealworms for the girls I put some in a little dish next to the planter the robin likes to sit on.
