JM
As it was really cold and frosty this morning, I thought I would give the girls a treat and make them some warm pellet porridge for breakfast - complete with sweetcorn niblets and a bit of mixed corn and mealworms (yum!). Needless to say they wolfed it down, but when I went down to see them just now, Bunty and Winnie looked like they must have used it as a face pack!! - they have dried porridge over their cheeks, comb and wattles! So I thought I would try and clean their faces (OK so I'm an optimist) - I got some warm water and cotton wool, and a nice warm area in the shed to work in - with corn scattered in the tray where I was going to put them ... No chance!! I picked them up OK, but they weren't having it! Needless to say, they are back outside pecking away, looking like grubby urchins! mostin
well, at least you tried to clean them up .
Janty
Mine always look like they are wearing more than they have eaten. I just let them get on with it. They pick the food from each other's faces later in the day.
JM
I suppose it is their way of putting it behind their ears for later! At least they'll have something to eat if they get the urge during the night!!
Sandychick
My chickens favourite dish is spaghetti mixed with yoghurt - it does cause an awful mess though, they get covered in the stuff
furryelephant
Same here... my OH shouted for me to come and look at our two yesterday. They were both staring through the patio window looking like something out of a cheap horror film with no make-up budget! Porridge everywhere... on beaks, ears, combs, feathers! You get the picture Left them out for the day and when I came to pop them away at night they were both clean again.. not sure how they manage it! jill the potter
Eww! of all the 'chicken recipes' I've seen on here; spaghetti and yoghurt actually sounds the worst Even the ones with the meal worms in don't sound as bad I know what you mean about porridge though, I make mine quite sloppy which of course makes even more of a mess! dancing cloud
My lot look like they've been snorkelling in their porridge rather than eating it and the fence is liberally covered as well where they've flicked it out of the bowl. One of Daisy's favourite tricks is to come and wipe her porridgey beak all over me. I'm sure she knows what she's doing as well, the little monster

Me too It was -7 degrees last night and I just happened to ask DH ( he's a country lad) whether he thought Chooks would be OK in their wooden coop. We talked about blankets and bubble wrap but it wasn't until he suggested an old duvet over the coop with a big grin on his face that I realised I was being had They were fine this morning though their droppings underneath their perch were frozen. mictogirl
Have to admit, I did my very first porridge for the girls this morning Had to get some garlic powder in them, so had that, pellets, oats and corn all mixed up with hot water. Sadly I then had to go to work so have no idea what the state of them now is

piptiddlepip
I can't believe I succumbed ....I went out this morning in PJ's and dressing gown and gave them a warm pellet mix with a sprinkling of oats.......I am definitely going soft in my old age. We do this every day! at 6:45 - 7am they get let out and there's two dishes of warm mash at the other end of the garden for them. They all do their funny long-leggedy run up the garden and tuck in. But mine are very neat ladies - no mess, not even from young Aggie.
