HELP... She's just eaten a whole FROG !!

Recommended Posts

The girls killed and almost pulped a mid-sized frog today. When I got home in the dark they were still up and chasing around with it. I grabbed it (broken skin and smashed - no sign of a skeleton, but all still one piece) but they pinched it back, the little blighters!

Then it disappeared and I realised that Gerty had eaten it, the whole thing in one! I don't know how she did it, but she was pretty quick - walking off a few seconds later with a huge crop. I picked her up and she seemed quite happy. I could feel it inside her crop, but there is no way that is coming out again.

She then went to bed and made afew unusual high pitched noises, but otherwise happy. :anxious:

I have read about impacted crops and massaging after giving oil etc, but not sure that will be enough for this. No problem yet - but will she suffer tomorrow, or be able to digest it?? :eh:

Worried of Crookham...

OMG! I knew chickens were greedy but that takes the biscuit!!!! I didn't know that they actually ate stuff like that - mine wont even eat a worm!!!

Sorry I can't help with advice as I'm quite new to this myself, but I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to help. At the very least I would have thought she'll have indigestion  Anyway, hope she's ok in the morning.

Hi - I wouldn't worry about a frog or 3! Our Pepperpot, Moose, is a great fan of frogs and toads, and has been known to eat 3+ in one day - and we're talking good sized beasts here  . She's the picture of good health, and lays fantastic eggs, never smaller than 75g and often closer to 90g. In fact, as soon as we let her out into the main garden she heads straight for the area where the poor animals live - almost as if she was hunting

mine have eaten a frog and a mouse (that I know off) and not experienced any problems, I wouldn't worry about it.

good grief how big are your chooks? I can't imagine a frog or a mouse being eaten by one of ours!

they are not actually that big surprisingly, the incident with the mouse was quite funny.

We heard a bit of a commotion going on in the back garden and came out to see what was going on, they were fighting over a mouse, as I tried to get the mouse away from them to decide what to do next, Starsky (the smaller chook) decided she was not giving the mouse up and swallowed it whole
