lay
Well we got a friend for Pongo a very beautiful Mrs Pepperpot. The size difference is ridiculous Pongo looks so small. Pongo has never once roosted … I guess her mum never taught her, Tiggy went straight in to bed got on the roosting bars when we looked in Pongo was snuggled up next to her – her first proper night sleeping like a Chicken. Pongo is 13 weeks old and Tiggy is 20 weeks. We are currently feeding them ‘small holders range - growers pellets’ we need to keep Pongo on these till 20 weeks? So are we safe to give the same to tiggy and eat any eggs that Tiggy might lay?
melcotton
As far as I know, there is no prob eathing eggs that have been layed whilst on growers pellets. The problem may be that your 20wk old may not get enough essential vitamins and minerals to lay as the different pellets are geared towards different functions. I don't know how you get around not feeding them the same though Hopefully someone else will be around with some more info that can help Mel
Guest
Growers mash and pellets is recommended till a chicken is approx 16 weeks, so I would imagine that they possible wouldn't do your older chicken much good, as Mel said they will be lacking in the essential minerals and vitamins required for that stage of growth. Perhaps you could speak to the breeder you got Pongo from, and see what they say?
Lesley
It would probably be better to put them both onto layers pellets/mash at this stage.
Lesley-Jean
My girls were about 12 weeks old when Omlet delivered them (said the delivery guy) The went straight on to layers pellets without any problems
Eyren
My three are all different ages, but they are all on layers mash/pellets. The supplier I got the bantams from said Angelica was point-of-lay and Cicely about three weeks younger - that was two weeks ago, and he had both of them in with other POL pullets, so I'm guessing that they are now about 17 and 14 weeks respectively (Cicely is still noticably smaller than Angelica and her comb, leg colour, etc are not so well-developed). Migsy is about 20 weeks and has just started laying
lay
The supplier said Tiggy (20 weeks) should be fine whilst we used up our remaining growers pellets (about half a bag left), but that we shouldn't eat her eggs if the feed had something called ACS (I think) in. I've been looking at the feed we have (Smallholder Range) and it is Coccidiostat free - I wonder if this is the same thing? I see now that Layers pellets should be introduced at 16 weeks anyway, so we might start putting out a mixture of both now.
freak29
Having not known the exact age of my two, we just started feeding them Layers and it was fine, at first they didn't seem to want to eat them but now they just adore them!
