Guest
we got the key to the allotments yesterday so today we went to drop some chicken poo off and took a few more pics. There's one of all the windfalls from the overhanging apple tree, that'll be a bonus come next autumn Just ordered our seed potatoes, onions and garlic from Thompson & Morgan. They have an allotment collection which comprises 3 early varieties and 3 maincrop varieties which seemed just the job http://www.thompson-morgan.com/potatoes1/product/zww5067/1.html plus we got some free potatoes and free onions by spending over a certain amount the far end of the lottie where the overhanging apple tree is... all the allotments in our area are new... we reckon we can get about 11 raised beds of approx 4-5ft wide by 7-8 ft long (mental calculation) in the space plus a shed and a little area for our niece to grow whatever she wants to
Redwing
Looks good, do you have to travel to get to it? Its very nice of you to give some space for your neice to grow stuff - inevitably sunflowers I guess!
Guest
Looks good, do you have to travel to get to it? it's roughly a mile away Its very nice of you to give some space for your neice to grow stuff - inevitably sunflowers I guess! good idea! Lesley
My littlies have been growing veg since they were less than 2 years old - usually with sunflowers at the back of them I once made beds that were 5' across and they were just that bit too wide to reach the middle easily - all our new ones are 4'. Snowy
Wow Poet - your allotments look very posh, all fenced like that, how lovely! I've started work on ours today - in contrast to yours, it is a bit of a field with some string tied round it!!
Valkyrie
Wow, love the fencing around it - how about a grape vine trained along it?? I think I have decided where your beans will grow, ahem !
Guest
thanks for the tip lesley keep us posted on your progress snowy koojie, I think we'll get an arch and try that grape idea, thanks
Matthew
what's the orientation of the plot? does it run north south etc and what side is the fence on? you will have to think about what you plant at the tree end as the tree will suck a lot of nutrients and moisture out of the soil

chickencam
Only just seen this. Great news Poet Have a happy and productive new year We love our allotment, this will be our 10th season. Do you know what kind of soil it is? Sandy is good for carrots and heavier soils are great for brassicas.
Matthew
what's the orientation of the plot? does it run north south etc and what side is the fence on? you will have to think about what you plant at the tree end as the tree will suck a lot of nutrients and moisture out of the soil thanks for the advice DH is checking the orientation, he mentioned it the other day and we've decided to put the shed and a bench at the apple tree end No worries... shed placement sounds very sensible Fingers crossed its east west with the fence on the north side... if so I think you should have a fruit corridor all the way along it!!!!! Guest
Ian (or "Two Sheds" as he is now known ) has been hard at it down the allotment today! He got some old flags and sleepers from freecycle so he's laid some of the flags as a base for the shed (which is coming next week) and started on his raised beds The second raised bed is only laid out, he needs to dig the sleepers in. We decided to put the sehd at the near end as you can put your wellies on easier if it's there

Guest
I like the "viewing" chair complete with flask in place already !! ..... very observant! When the shed goes up, he's getting a little travel kettle set up in there and using his battery pack/starter thing from the camper van to make cuppas! surferdog
That allotment is ENORMOUS! I think here they are only giving out half plots as they are nowhere near as big as that. Bet you can't wait to get planting!
Guest
well, he's been at it again today He's onto raised bed number 3 now! He's not gone right up to the fence with the side of the bed, so that he can plant things up the fence. Peas or whatever...

surferdog
Wow Poet! You are making great progress - can't wait to see how it develops. (PS I have shed envy , sheds are only allowed on certain parts of the site we've been offered - our plot-to-be is in a shed-free zone )
chickencam
Great progress Poet. It is madness not to allow sheds on an allotment, where are you meant to keep everything
