the progress of our allotment...

Recommended Posts

We've been on the allotment waiting list since March and we were told the waiting list was about 2 years. We phoned again a few months ago and were told there was a new site being planned and we may hear something in the new year. We got a letter this morning telling us we've been allocated a plot!!!!:D

We rang to find out where it was but the person who deals with it isn't in til tomorrow so once we find out where it is, we can go and have a look and make sure it's suitable. Fingers x'd it will be.

I'm so excited!

I found out where it is so me and mum popped down for a peek (with a torch!), Ian is at work.

It was in the middle of a council estate, behind a high fence with barbed wire on top (so looks secure) there seemed to be only about 3 or 4 plots at the most and I don't know which is ours or how much space we have but it's not too far from us and none of the plots seemed overgrown, they all looked well cared for actually.

Ian and I will go and have a look in the daylight and hopefully post some pics tomorrow :D

...what will you grow first??? :D:D

...

not sure, quite possibly we'll start off with a few different potato varieties, that will help break the ground up too. Need to see how much space we have really and I'll check with farmer Ian to see what he wants to do

how's your lottie going Cathy, I don't think we've had an update for a while have we? The last I heard, Kev was planning to wire up your raised beds to the national grid!

when Kev gets home ill get him to send you the link to his allotment helper website :D

apparently it helps you to plan your plot and emails you to tell you when to plant stuff 8)

if you keep it going for a few years it warns you what not to plant where and encourages crop rotation.

how fab :D:D:D

Oh snap. I got a letter from the council for an allotment yesterday and wandered down to take a look in the afternoon. I was told a wait of over 18 months but Im sure I only put my name down about 6 months ago.

Very excited will be a fun family project. I just want to grow fruit as the boys both hate veg, and its soft fruit that is so stupidly expensive in the supermarket. What you planning on growing?

well done cat, can't wait to see some pics :D

went to see it this morning, it's bigger than we thought. Apparently it used to be a smallholding but the council bought it and split it up into allotments. There's quite a bit of hardcore and glass that need clearing but we're very pleased with the size. There's even an overhanging apple tree from one of the gardens next to it, bonus!

we'll get cracking in the new year!:lol:

Great news Poet - and Cat! We can all allotment together! :D

Ooooh Couperwife, could I have a link to the allotment planner as well please? We get access to ours on the 1st january!! I'm beginning to panic now and wondering if we will be taking on too much. But OH is going back onto shifts in the next few weeks as well, and has volunteered to help so that will be a bonus! 8) Poachedegg - I hope you don't have too long to wait!

Can he post it here on here please Cathy, I am hoping to get our veg patch resurrected now that the builders have finished using it as a dumping ground! It would be very helpful to have such reminders arriving when necessary.

Thanks,

try this :D

http://www.growveg.com/

I've put the whole name on rather than just the hyperlink, so you know where to look.

Kev says that you have to pay for it (£15 annual subs), but you do get a trial (30 days)

kev thinks its really good (and he does take a lot of impressing :lol: )

it really does look like allotment city at the moment doesnt it :D

happy 'lotting people
