Snowy
Oh poor you! Some people are more sensitive to the components in some remedies, so you probably are sensitive to something in the mix. What was the medicine you took? And Poet's advice is good - and probably more efective than OTC cough remedies. Also try a steam inhalation before you go to bed. Egluntyne
Him Indoors has just booted me out of bed because of my hacking cough, which has come from no-where. Not a drop of cough medicine in the house. I felt so ill yesterday evening that I went to bed at 8pm. I am wide awake now and might go to the supermarket in a little while! My throat is sooooo sore. Egluntyne
Ta muchly. Of course he is bound to get it and naturally will be far worse than I am. He did come downstairs a few minutes ago to see if I was OK. And said.....I'll have a cup of tea if you are making one. I think he was kidding. I hope he was, for his sake. Seagazer
I always remember the doctor telling me not to bother taking cough medicine because it just suppresses a natural reaction and you need to cough. Although having had a child who coughs with her asthma I have done the 'have some cough medicine now' thing after night after night of coughing. I was going to suggest the hot water, honey and lemon thing. My OH is currently coming down with the flu. Great timing, looks like I'll be cooking Christmas dinner this year Hope everyone recovers really quickly.
Yorkshire Pudding
Nasty, poor you. Hot honey and lemon is much better than most cough medicine anyway, and tastes nicer, and won't give you nightmares or keep you awake or knock you out (all of which can happen with some of the over-the-counter cough and cold medicines out there). I have heard what Seagazer says from my GP too - you shouldn't suppress a productive cough (one that is shifting mucus rather than just dry and tickly) because is it clearing the debris of the infection from your throat. The pain, swelling and coughing is all part of your body's immune process. Even though it makes you feel terrible, if you didn't have them you would need to worry as it would indicate that your body was unable to defend itself against the virus. Also a mild temperature is a good thing because it slows down the rate of virus production, so wrapping up warm and sweating it out can speed up recovery. Obviously if a temperature gets very high that is a different matter! Paracetamol if you need it, Vicks to inhale, honey and lemon, plenty of rest and drinks, keep warm and lots of time on the forum! Clur
I had a similar reaction to Night Nurse - really spaced me out, horrible dreams the lot A friend told me about taking honey, lemon and grated ginger in hot water - works every time for me! Geoid
If you do use cough medicine do not get Lemsip Max All In One, it tastes vile! Like pouring slow setting concrete that tastes like mouthwash down your throat.
The Dogmother
I have the same reaction to cough and cold remedies - I find that inhaling steam with some menthol and eucalyptus in the water really helps though.. good for your skin too. I felt really rubbish all day at work yesterday, went to bed at 8.30pm and feel a bit better today. Lots of flu going around up here..... I sooo don't want it for Christmas! Tiggy
there's a lot of it about the advice on here is spot on, some people have horrid reactions to medicines but hot drinks paracetamol & steam are your best bet - hope you are feeling better soon

Snowy
I must say that the honey and lemon sounds rather yummy cathy x Tastes even better with a shot of whisky in it (Grown-ups only!)! Our version involves whisky or brandy, a slug of honey, lemon juice, 2 cloves and a pinch each of ginger and cinnamon (oh yes, and hot water nearly forgot that bit)

Janty
Hubby made me bottles of rosehip syrup and I use that as a hot drink. I use one part syrup to three parts boiling water. It has lots of vitamin C and I have been taking my tablets with it when trying to get over this horrible cough and general rottenness. There are still lots of rosehips about. Hubby and son went walking for about five hours yesterday just around town and they brought back several bags full of rosehips for more yummy syrup.
