Sore Eye Question

Recommended Posts

I'm posting this as a new topic for mrsallen08 who had added this question to my thread. think it's worthy of a new topic - sadly I'm unable to make any suggestions as I have no experience of eye problems. Hopefully someone can help?

Hi

I hope your Siggy is feeling a little better. Sorry to pinch your post but had a quick question about mine!

Im a bit concerned with one of my hens as she had a poorly eye which didnt look infected or swollen but slightly watery and closed a little. I gently bathed her eye to check their was no damage to her actual eye (wondered if she had been pecked at) but all is fine, no redness or swelling just watery!? I have noticed today that she is a bit snotty too and was sneezing. My smallest bantam has also been sneezing so they are both indoors tonight. Both are feeding and happy and have been free ranging with the rest of the flock today.

Do you think the eye and sneezing are separate issues? Im thinking common cold which is why I have isolated them both and keeping them indoors till they recover. If the eye doesn't get any better in a day or two I will consult the vet before the weekend...

Any advice???

I have always used cold tea (no milk, no sugar) to be very soothing on sore eyes, human or chicken. It has mildly antiseptic properties too.

It might be worth examining the eye to make sure that there is no foreign body present.

The eyes could just be sore as a result of the cold.

we've had 2 seperate occasions of eye problems here. Currently dealing with one now.

Our little'un has swollen eye - lid closes a lot, looks uncomfortable. After a week of bathing with salt water and cold black tea we had no success and had to resort to the vet for a tube of cream. The eye is gradually going down - vet thinks infection or tumour :anxious:

past problem with Misty, watery eye/looked sore - needed antibiotics from the vet (cleared up quickly)

I would start off with any bathing methods, if symptoms persist then seek vets attention.

I had the same with Milly. Eye was closed for a few days and bathing with salt water didn't clear it. Vet said it could be Mycoplasmia and gave her an antibiotic injection just in case, also antibiotic eye ointment. She was looking off colour as well - hunched etc which is why I think he though it could be Myco. Eye did look a bit red when he opened it, seemed like it could have been pecked. Anyway it cleared up and she perked right up within 2 days.

Hope she picks up okay but a trip to the vet might be in order just to check if no result with the salt water or tea bags.

Thanks so much snow white for reposting this!

We have kept our hen in for 2 nights now in our spare room! (in an indoor cage)

Her eye is open a lot more now and all we have done is bathed it with salt water and given her ACV in her water. Still a bit snuffly but doesnt have a snotty nose anymore.

Thanks for all your replies and I will definately try the Tea idea next time as it seems to be a good one too!
