Frozen Egg, anyone?

Recommended Posts

My chooks decided to start molting about 2 weeks ago, just as the cold weather came along, so, bless them, they are a bit chilly now, and have more or less given up laying eggs (went through the winter with hardly any slow down last year!).

SO - I haven't been bothering to trudge down the garden every day to collect the eggs which aren't there, and have been going every couple/3 days.

I always take the eggs out, and pop them on the top of the run, whilst I lock up (due to theft, my eglu looks like fort knox!). Unfortunately, having been used to not having any eggs, I clear forgot about the 1 lonely egg I left on top of the run... for 2 days.

I am amazed nothing ran off with it in the meantime - but I noticed it down there the other day, so went and collected it - the shell was split the whole length of the egg, and I could see, the inside was frozen!

Being the messy little schoolboy I am at heart, I couldn't resist but peel the shell off, and take a look!

This is what I found!!! Unfortunately, I can't now find the photo of it still with shell on - who knows where that's gone!

Anyway - note to self (and others) - don't leave your eggs outside on cold winters' nights!

Decided eating it might be a bit risky! It was melting while I held it to take the shell off.

It was weird though, as it melted, it was turning back into normal "egg white stuff" - which I know makes me sound really thick - but I had just expected it to melt back as water, to start with at least! :anxious:

I have 5 chooks at present, and I had been getting 4-5 a day for ages, but then they decided molting was a good plan, and I've had about 3 in the last month!

It is RUBBISH having to buy eggs AND chicken food all in one shopping trip!

I freeze the white of egg if I have a recipe that only calls for yolks so that I can make meringue etc at a later date. They freeze really well so I suppose in theory if you'd thawed it the white could have been used (and I suspect the yolk would have been ok too for maybe scrambling not sure how tasty I would be though!).

Great picture :D
