HENthusiastic
Our local riding stables have just inherited 8 lovely fiesty rescue hens! The lady who lives there has wanted some rescue hens for a while. Then she found out that a friend of a friend actually drives one of those horrid lorrys that take chickens to the slaughter house Well, her friend managed to pursuade the lorry driver to 'loose' 8 of the hens They have been happily getting used to their new environment for a couple of days now. Me and OH went up to visit them and threw them some corn, but they didn't know what to do with it and just ran away from it. They don't seem in too bad condition and are not as scared as our ex batts were when we first got them. Also, they dont seem a bit bothered about all the horses trundling around. In fact when we saw them one of them looked as if she was seriously considering jumping up onto one of the horses backs! I'm so happy for them and am looking forward to watching them re-feather and make themselves at home there
Barkisland
That's wonderful! I have just put my name down for 3 ex batts for next weekend. Wish me luck!
HENthusiastic
Good luck to you and to you too. Ex-batts are great. You wont regret it. Its extra special the first time you see them scratch the earth, or learn what to do with treats....... or especially the first time one of them sunbathes! Bet you cant wait. Barkisland
Yes, I doubt I will sleep much this week now! I will go for some layers mash on Tuesday, do I need anything else other than what I already have for my other girls?
HENthusiastic
I dont think they need much else really. As long as theyve got somewhere to live, some different feeding and drinking stations (as they can be a bit competitive with each other to start with). Oh the only other thing is that ours were fairly clumsy and could not manage even the slightest sloping ramp. I had to do an emergency diy job to change their 2 story accomodation into single! Barkisland
Mine will be going into an eglu with run, which will be inside my walk in run and beside my cube with the other girls - they will be able to see each other but not make bodily contact until I decide the time is right. They will be nice and safe I have just ordered some leg rings, since I expect they might be difficult to tell apart when they start to re-feather. Ooooh, Can't wait! Ex-batts really are very rewarding and you will have no problems telling them apart - I can recognise all 6 of mine (usually by who's in what mischief! )

mostin
Fantastic news Hen , how great that you'll see them all the time at the stables. What a lovely lorry driver, how sad that 8 hens accidentally fell off his truck
