Is there room at the inn???

Recommended Posts

Hi I have 6 lovely hybrid girlies....

We are building a walk in run soon :D:D:D:D:D

I would really like to add a couple more girls. We've settled on either a buff/speckled sussex and a silver laced Wyandotte (if I can find them):lol::lol:

Does anyone know if there would be enough room in the cube for them? I know it can take up to 10, but I think these girls may be bigger....

Any advice???

thanks

Hi QC

The cube will hold them no problem - the only restriction with the cube is the run that it comes with, but as you are having a walk in run this shouldn't be an issue.

We have 8 girls in our cube (including 3 larger ladies - 2 cochin and a speckled sussex) and there is loads of room for them all at night time.

:D

We only picked up our Sussex last week - she is just reaching point of lay so no eggs yet.. but from what I understand they will be cream in colour though, not brown.

She is stunning looking bird, big with beautiful markings... seems quite placid too :) I love her to bits!

Hi

I have a Buff Sussex, who is 20 weeks and not yet crouching :( , but she is bigger than my GNR and 3 x PP . :o

We hatched her last September and she's a big cuddly feather ball........absolutely gorgeous.

So, I only have five  so that must mean that I can get at least another 3......ooohhhh, let me see......cream legbar x 2 and one that lays a lovely white egg....yes?

We found 2 of our turkeys cuddled in beside our 10 chickens in the cube!!!!

Oh I would have loved to have seen that!!

I agree, we have 8 birds.. and room for 2-3 more easily, in the cube, as you say, it is the 'run' or 'free-ranging' space that is the limiter.

I have 7 girls in my cube and one is a Speckled Sussex (picture below of Dorabella on her way up the cube ladder). She is quite a big girl now - largest of my lot followed by Petula my Bluebelle. No problem with them inside the cube plus I have a walk in run with the cube on the outside of the run - see my album as to how my DH sorted this.

Dorabella hasn't started laying yet (was told she'd be the last to lay out of my 4 newest girls) as they take a while longer than some breeds to get going so can't answer any questions about egg colour for her yet. Hoping it won't be too long now.

She has a lovely bum too :lol:

Can I ask where you got her from??? Am looking for breeders for the sussex and wyandottes..

I bought her from Pear Tree Farm near Towcester late last autum along with 3 others (details in my signature). I too at the time was looking for Wynadottes but couldn't find anyone locally who had any Pullets only chicks. I found the Breeders listings in Practical Poultry useful as a starting point. I also did a lot of Googling too. Will have to wait for Wyandottes now until we move somewhere bigger sadly.

I wondered what your avatar was - chicken bum eh
I've changed it now as I agree, it didn't make sense unless you knew what it was

I am thinking I'll wait 'til june and the them all delivered from Wernlas.... can I ask what your Leghorns are like??

One is more friendly than the other that is Marigold (Buff Mottled), she is still quite flighty but has calmed down a lot since laying. Pearl on the other hand I can't get near in daylight (unless armed with tuna or mealworms and even then she's more of grab it and run kinda girl), she has also taken a fancy to the other girls fluffy knickers since she started to lay recently. So am keeping an eye on her. Having said that they are both great girls and are very individual as far as personality is concerned, as are all my others.
