Newbie - Which bark chippings?

Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Sorry cant help with the bark chippings, I use Aubiose everywhere. Someone will be along so to help no doubt. :D

Hi, I am new to this site. Sorry what is Aubiose ? I have recently bought a wooden chicken house, I was unaware of eglu at the time, :( bumber ! but could anyone please tell me what would be best to use in the house ?

from a none chicken owner, yet !

I HAVE A MATE WITH A WOODEN CHICKEN HOUSE SHE SUGGESTED SILICONING ALL THE CRACKS AND GAPS TO LOWER THE CHANCE OF REDMITE AND PRESSURE WASHING!

AUBIOSE IS HORSE BEDDING I THINK IF YOU TYPE IT INTO GOOGLE YOU WILL FIND A SITE THAT WILL TELL YOU ABOUT IT I HAVE ONLY JUST LEARNED ABOUT IT MYSELF X

AS FOR THE BEDDING I WILL LEAVE THAT TO THE EXPERTS I STILL HAVENT GOT MY CHICKENS YET :(

I use natural wood chippings from B&Q (about £4 a bag) if you have a friendly tree surgeon nearby they may let you have some for free

Redwing where do you get them in B and Q? I have had to resort to bark chippings as I can't find wood chip.... any tips more than welcome, thank you :D

I cannot find woodchip at B and Q so have resorted to bark chippings for the last few months - having no problem but if anyone can help with WHERE I can find wood chip I would be really grateful as would much prefer it. Thanks :D

you can buy 100ltr bags (i think) or 1metre bulk bag here they are not all coloured they also sell just plain old natural wood chippings

I've used nothing but bark chippings and have had no problems at all. B & Q here has a 3 bags (100 litres) for £12 offer (not sure if that's everywhere). 1 one hundred litre bag seems more than sufficient for a standard eglu run. I clean out every 3 weeks and use the mucky chips as mulch around my currant bushes and fruit trees, etc. at the allotment. :D

They are at the back on the left.

:lol: Sorry couldn't resist. I couldn't get them at one branch so tried another and they are in at present. If you ask they will get them in for you at £4 odd a big pack. :D

I got so impatient about saving extra money to get the cube I finally gave in and bought an eglu just means i can't get more than 3 chickens :( but decided on PURPLE EGLU (purple eglu) with refresher pack coz i don't want the wooden bars (nice marketing ploy there huh) and a lilac shade to compliment the purple eglu, purple shade would of been way too much purple mix and match i say lol sooo eggcited it arrives on the 19th FEB haven't told my husband yet lol I will eventually totally rainbow with accessories :) woohoo eglu on the way. Cannae get any chickens til after my impending op but at least i got the most expensive bit of kit so rest will be easy to sort out when i have recovered :D

In relation to Rosemarysbaby last post:-

She mentioned she ordered the purple eglu (purple eglu) with "refresher pack" cos she didnt want the wooden bars. I'm hopefully ordering an eglu soon, does this mean it will come with wooden bars then? what does a "refresher pack" mean

Hopefully somebody could explain "refresher pack" to me - sorry If I appear a bit thick :(

Thanks for any help :D

I got an eglu in November and it came with plastic bars, not wooden ones. I think the 'Mark 1' model had wooden bars, so the refresher pack is a kind of conversion kit - the new ones (Mark2) have the plastic and you don't need to get the extra kit.

You might give omlet a ring to check on this, but I'd suggest that you don't need the refresher kit if you're buying a brand-new eglu.

refresher pack is a set of plastic roosting bars and a coloured shade of your choice it covers more than the shade you get originally costs £24.95 i think

Got mine from George Ogilvie at Ballencrieff Mains Farm near Longniddry. He only had about 5 breeds when I phoned originally but he may well have more now! Worth a call.

This is the website for their pigs but it may be the same number for the chickens (can't find the number I used!)

Awww man i wish i had loads of land coz i would love to have some piggies proper piggies not the guinea pigs i have although they are very kyoot too and smell like newborn puppies awwwwwww thanks for the info i will check it out need to see how far longniddry is from here although i have heard of it so probably not too far away. I'll need to make several batches of cakes for my sister in law to get rid of the guilt of hitching a ride out to edinburgh for chickens :D:lol:

I google mapped the journey looks quite a bit away might need to stick to the hi-lines in biggar the lady sells them for £10 each pol pullets which is great when guy in kirknewton sells same breed for £18 they do have black rocks aswell though and sussex light hybrids they all look lovely but he is rather pricey in comparison.

Looks like i will be buying coloured expander leg bands  I ordered coloured bowls today that attach to side of run it was 4 for £2.50 which is aight planning on using them as grit boxes.

I am still aiming for my rainbow chicken habitat lol

It's quite a quick route to Ballencrieff to be honest, as you can get almost the whole way there on the A1. He charges £15 (or did 18 months ago). Bear in mind, it's really nice having different colours of chicken - they often lay different coloured eggs too!

yeah It would be nice having 3 different colours/breeds i did have my heart set on miss pepperpots and gingernut rangers after reading up on a zillion breeds i was in love with them but gotta get what region allows if i wait for 5 mths i could get either a cuckoo maran, light sussex or a silkie! silkies are really odd looking lol but not good layers apparently, crazy afro birdies
