ice cream makers? To buy or not to buy that is the question

Recommended Posts

I splurged on the gaggia gelatiera. Horribly expensive to buy but incredibly easy to use and reliably makes great ice cream/frozen yoghurt/sorbet :D . There was no point in me buying one where you had to freeze the bowl, firstly because I would forget and secondly because the bowl is large and there wouldn't be enough spare room in the freezer.

I expected to make loads of the stuff last summer when I got my little monsters, but then I started selling the eggs at work and rarely had any left for me  - another good plan bites the dust  !

I REALLY love the look of the ones where you dont have to freeze anything as we only have a tiny freezer and it sounds a bit of hassle. However if hubby found out I put another few hundred on the credit card he would have a fit.

Although he knows nothing about ice cream makers and I could tell him it was £50 and hide the statements!!!

well I got one - not the expensive one though! I decided that I would get the Magimix one and buy the ben and jerrys book too!

So now its in the freezer ready for when i start to make some.

The main reason is t6o make ice cream for my soya/egg/dairy allergy daughter (2y) so going to do a google for what to make her.

The soya free/dairy free ice creams to buy are a lot of money and to have them delivered is £10 - so, as I told my husband, I am SAVING money  .

Any good recipes for ice cream bring it on!

i must say i used mine yesterday for the 2nd time in 6 years - it is only a cheapy one - a phillips.

this is the recipe i used (but obviously it is not soya based) but i bet it would work well with a substitute

4 eggs separated

4oz sifted icing sugar

1tsp vanilla essence or 1 pod of vanilla

300ml of double cream (or substitute)

1 whisk egg whites until stiff then add the icing sugar gradually and whisk

2 whisk yolks and vanilla and gently fold into the egg white mixture

3 fold in the cream (or substitute) and pop into the ice cream maker, alternatively put in the freezer and stir every 10 - 15 minutes to break up the ice crystals

We Bought a kitchen aid mixer a year or so ago, and you could send off for a free ice cream mixer attachment and it's fab!!! I havent made sorbet yet, but i'll give it a try.

I wish i had the pasta attachment too... I bought the manual one and it takes ages and always seems hard....??? Not sure what i am doing wrong!
