Nicola O
....for Enid, one of my original Omlet girls. Left her at the vets this morning as she has been unwell since Sunday afternoon. She has a large swelling 'underneath' - so I'm thinking Peritonitis - not really walking about much, not eating, drinking slightly (only if I encourage her) and on Monday morning her comb turned blue but then went back to normal, but today looks small and a bit shrivelled, probably because she's getting dehydrated. She also has slightly laboured breathing. The vet is going to stick a needle in and see if the swelling is fluid, and drain off as much as he can if that's what it is. But he said she might need diuretics (spl?) for the rest of her life to prevent it happening again. If it is a mass of some sort they probably is not much they can do, and she may need to be PTS. They will let me know later.......so, pray for little Enid . Nicola. Edited February 24, 2009 by Guest

Nicola O
Thanks guys......once again the Omleteer Prayers and Good Vibes have done the trick Vet just phoned, they have drained 750ml of fluid from her, , poor girl, and she is now a lot brighter and perkier. He said he can now feel some lumps inside which could be egg-laying tackle problem which means that the problem could return (but of course it could be a number of other things). But she was so good when he drained the fluid - she didn't panic or get at all stressed - that he would have no worries about doing it again if she needed it. She now will have a course of anti-bac. and anti-flam. for a while and he recomends the diuretics to help her get rid of fluid before it gets a chance to build up again. They would be a small price to pay to keep her well. So I suppose we are not completely out of the woods yet, but hopefully nearly there. I'm off to pick her up in the morning - they are just keeping her overnight to moniter her but then she can come home . Thanks again, from a very happy Nicola and Enid. chelsea
just caught up with this thread,...so pleased Enid is still with us am glad the vet helped, lets hope she can get through this. I have a girl whose battled on and off with sterile peritonitis for 18 months or so and she has lead a normal chickeny life mostly (she has her moments) so if its sterile peritonitis there is hope! A course of Baytril should help with preventing the infection following the drain. keep us posted.
Nicola O
Oh no....just had a call from the vet - Enid just passed away quite suddenly . I suppose it meant that she was sicker than we thought. It is such a shame as the vet said she was doing really well after the fluid was drained, the colour of the fluid meant it was sterile peritonitis, but he said that there must have been more going on in her insides than we could have realised.
