Sunshine
My sister is in year 6 and her school have decided they dressing up for world book day this year(they haven't dressed up for a few years). So we are a bit stuck for ideas, she reads a lot and its getting hard finding books that she wants to read. The recommendations on the other thread have been very useful and i will definately suggest them to her. The books she has read most recently are those by Jacqueline Wilson, the animal ark series and ones set at a theatre school. She doesn't like fantasy books at all. As it will be her last dress up for world book day we want to make an effort with her outfit. Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz is a possibility as she studied it last term(although not sure if lots of people will do Dorothy) Any ideas? Millihelen
When my boys were in primary we always went for whatever we could do with what we'd got. The dressing up box contained various embroidered and plain waistcoats, striped and white shirts, lots of scarves, belts, hats etc. Most of the results were fairly predictable - pirates, one of the 3 little pigs etc - but one memorable day one son dressed himself (no help from me!) as a Tudor - with old striped bemuda shorts of mine tucked into long yellow airline sox, the waistcoat and shirt - and a floppy velvet hat! My mind is pretty blank on your dilemma - unless you go and buy loads of transfers and turn her into the tattooed mum!
Cinnamon
When Devon was small she dressed up as Cinders for word book day. All it took was a little frock, an apron which I sewed a few big patches on to, a little besom broom which was left over from Halloween & some smuts on her cheeks. She actually won first prize
Mrs Frugal
Ollie dressed up as an evacuee for "Goodnight Mr Tom". Easy costume - small square cardboard box wrapped in brown paper with a string handle and a luggage tag with his name on pinned to a woolly jumper plus shorts and long socks. Easy to do a similar version for a girl.
Chook n Boo Mum
Last year DD (oops I made a big mistake, I started off saying DS not DD!!!!! ) had just finished reading Charlotte's Web & went as Fern the little girl (normal jeans, sweatshirt & boots) with Charlotte the spider pinned on her shoulder, made from silver fabric wrapped around a handful of cotton wool balls to for her body and silver pipecleaners for her legs, and carrying Wilbur, one of those clockwork piglets which wander around snorting & oinking! Previous year she went as the little girl in the Secret Unicorn books - just wore her riding kit & carried a unicorn toy. This year she could go as the Thelwell rider as we've recently bought her some of the old books. She used to ride a pony who was such a Thelwell lookalike! One year DS went a Young Jack Sparrow, and the next year as Skulduggery Pleasant. We like easy costumes in this house!!! Sha x
Hen Watch
Few months ago my school had a similar book day to raise money for the library. My daughter went as the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. 99p witch nose and £1.99 broomstick both from the party supplies shop, green face paint (hands and face), and I already had an old witch hat plus a long black skirt and blouse. There were a few Alice in Wonderlands. Harry Potters (male and female.....). One girl dressed up in a bin bag as "Dustbin Baby" by Jacqueline Wilson. My son would not dress up and ended up in his stripy T shirt and went as Horrid Henry. In fact there were a lot of boys who came as Horrid Henry or Alex Rider and the odd Jedi thrown in for good measure.....
jess
When I was little my mum made me an excellent dog costume for 101 dalmations!
bluekarin
My ED went as Fantastic Mr Fox one year. She wore a dark red jacket, brown shorts and we made a tail and some ears. She also went as Hermione Granger. We made a badge, had a black cloak and plaited her hair overnight so it was all frizzy when we took it down. YD daughter usually went as a princess so that was just one of her dressing up dresses. She has just informed me that she went as Mrs McGonagal one year too and that I painted a tartan pattern on a hat and I have absolutely no recollection of this
Purplemaniacs
Hi Emma I am in the same position, the school where I work today informed that I have to dress up for World Book Day, nothing like lots of notice. I too am stuck for ideas. If anyone has any thoughts I would be very grateful, I work with 4 to 7 year olds. Thanks Chrissie
