dear all,

i had it all planned ...get an eglu...build a walk in run etc etc ....que omlet invading my life and becoming addicted to this site whilst i dreamed of eglus and fresh eggs....

....then i thought...'well the space i have allocated is big enough for a cube...i know i shall get a cube instead and then when/if i move there will be a bit of scope for expansion...''

right so thats it sorted...purple cube with walk in run....right...time to start saving..

,,,time passes...the weeks and months pass as i save away...still addicted to omletsville...

...then a huge thread on leaking cubes...with foam insterts available from omlet which clearly says to me that there must be a leaky issue if they are supplying foamy bits to seal it all up etc etc....

Its clear not everyone has a problem, in fact most dont, but the issue of inconsistant reports makes me a little wary before investing a huge amount of spondulees in a shiney new cube.

A comment along the lines of - '' the eglu is superb, sleek and perfect, but the cube appears to have a few issues'' has meant i am now contemplating an eglu instead , just to be on the safe side,. I have always wanted chooks and dont want to be dissapointed. I have no quarms with the concept/design - there cannot be anything better in my eyes, just dont want to spend £500+ only to find out the thing leaks...or starts to leak in a years time...

perhaps my first idea of getting an eglu is best, i supose they do hold thier value if/when a cubemk2 becomes available..

thoughts??

If it's in a walk in run it's not likely to get wet is it. :? so you can get lots of hens.

If you are really worried why not get a wooden house they are easier to patch up? There are some really nice ones but almost the same money as a cube.

No problem with mine but that doesn't help. :D

the cube/eglu would be outside of the walk in run....

i cannot be done with a wooden one...ease of cleaning etc etc is essential for me, asthetics too hence a purple cube/egle!!!!

I've been going back and forth on this very subject. Seems like it's only a few Cubes that have some issues. Many others don't. With some it starts months after they've had them. I really like the Cube. But I'm in the States and decided (I think....always subject to change again.) that I'll build a walk in run with an eglu. Maybe I'll upgrade later. Both are great designs and I love the ease of cleaning. It's never been a question of wood or not, it's always been Cube or Eglu. Today it's Eglu....we'll see what tomorrow brings. I'm still a little nervous about whether I'd get a leaking Cube...even though it seems kinda rare. I'm a real newbie...never had chickens before, so don't know what I'd do if I had chickens and the Cube started to leak. HEY! Maybe I'M the chicken for not just ordering the Cube!

I have the luxury of not deciding yet since the Cube won't be shipped to the States until late Spring. So that's why I haven't made a solid decision yet.

It seems that a lot of the cube leaking issues have been sorted. On the whole Omlet's customer care is excellent and they are keen to resolve any faults with their products. It would definitely be worth buying a cube over an eglu if you're planing to have more than 3 girls.

I've never had a problem with my cube and I think as long as the cube is set on a flat surface your chances of getting a leaky one are minimal.

I think the cube is brilliant (even though I had to sort out a slight leak problem around the eggport door on one of mine).

But the Eglu is nice too, especially if you have a walk-in run and can get it off the ground. I really don't like the way it sits on the ground with the standard run.

I think the proportion of leaky Cubes is probably not as great as you might think from reading on here - remember, people tend to post when they have a problem, and the people whose Cubes DIDN'T leak generally don't bother to post! I know some people had a major problem. Mine has been fine, although as Plum says, that doesn't help!

If you are going to have a walk-in run and you've got room for a Cube on the outside, then I would go for it. It will allow you to expand your flock in future, and it's much easier to clean than an Eglu because it's already at waist height - you'd need to put an Eglu on a table for the same effect.

My only dissatisfaction with the Cube is its rather, well, cuboid shape! It's not as funky as the Eglu.

That is my issue too. I think because I had 2 eglus first (and fell in love with them!) that I was disappointed with the non funkieness of the cube. My cube functions perfectly and does the job (no leaks but it is inside my run), but I prefer the design of the eglu. Most others love their cube - its just personal taste.

Why not visit a local eglu & cube owner near you and then make your mind up?

If you are getting a walk in run then there shouldn't be a problem.

I agree that the biggest you can afford from the outset is probably the most economical way to go in the long run.

Why not ring Omlet and discuss your concerns..Ask to speak to Johannes or James.

Maybe you could ask for one to be road tested for leaks before they send it out to you.

My cube didn't leak before it went into the walk in run.

HI

I am still flitting between the eglu and sitting it on a small set of wheels that I can pull along and move around now. & then getting a second eglu if I need to get more chickens(although I only want a few eggs)!!

I wish I could find out the % of customers satisfied with their cubes??(it would be good if it was 100% or 99.9%)? I agree sometimes we just hear about the odd leaky one but again its not very good PR for Omlet and I suppose i am a bit put off the cube too for this reason.

BUT fortunately I am in the delivery area so I may get them to put it together for me and if there is a problem then as least I know it was built properly. They definitely should not leak!

Are they made in china?

One day I want an eglu and the next a cube!! Decisions Decisions!

Nearly ready to order one too!

indie 999 - You sound exactly like me! I want to order. I'm ready to order. But WAHT to order!!! Today I'm leaning towards a walkin with an eglu. Where I live we're limited to 4 hens, so although I love the cube, the eglu would work. (I'm getting 3 hens)

Oh....now you all have me thinking about the cube again......

Hello

I have been studying eglus/cubes etc for about 2 years now , I visited someone to look at both etc etc

The only problem they had with their cube was the wheel came off but Omlet replaced it very speedily and no fuss but the cube I saw was eggcellent. Its the leaky issues I read about

I am still unsure which to get..I hanker for the cube but then a bad leaky post will appear and throw me into complete confusion.

I have posted a question on the site asking if people that upgraded to a cube wished they had got a second eglu instead??Daft I know

I agree a poll would be good but I have no idea how to set one of those up??

Watch this space?

Are we all confusing each other...I keep thinking just order the darn thing..its a lot of money!

Good luck to us all

You set up a poll when you do a new post ... scroll down to the bottom under the bit where you post the main text, and it should show you how to do it.

However, I still suspect that people with leaky Cubes will rush to post, and those whose Cubes don't leak will not bother, and so you may get a skewed response. (Don't shout at me Clash City Rocker, I know you had a major problem and that it's very frustrating to have lots of people going 'well, mine's ok'!)

Don't forget there are also a lot of people who buy Cubes and Eglus who don't post on the forum (weird, I know, but there are some!).

If you're thinking of getting more hens in the long run, then I'd recommend getting the larger housing at the outset.

From what I understand, the majority of people are happy with their cubes, but don't feel the need to post on here. As with any forum, the ones who post aren't happy for various reasons.

The cube is now on the mark 2 version and I understand that leaking problems have been ironed out. There is an unconditional money back guarantee on the products within a month of purchase, so if you're not happy for whatever reason, then you just have to call Omlet to collect it.

Omlet want to charge me £30.00 to collect my leaking cube. I paid £730.01 for my cube and have been offered a refund of £595.00 (less £30.00 collection fee). While I am aware that my cube is now nearly 12 months old, I have had problems with it since the day it was installed by Omlet.

One condition (for me) of getting any refund is that I must stop posting about my leaking cube on this forum.
