First of all, sorry to hear your sorry story. What a shock. Poor bird.

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all. You don't buy a chicken expecting it only to live for five days. She was probably ill when you got her and can't be blamed for not knowing that when you took your birds home.

I'd watch the rest of your hens for any signs of sickness, though, and perhaps your supplier ought to hold off selling any more for a few days while (s)he finds out whether there's anything catching in the flock as a whole.

oh dear, I am sorry to hear that, and after such a short time too, it must have been a shock to you:(

Its a bit difficult saying anything about the replacement Q without some/any ideas of what may have been wrong with her. Sadly, sometimes birds do just die, its one of those things, and it can be impossible to attribute the cause to anything or, indeed, anybody. However, if you had some reason to suspect she might have been a bit poorly when you got her (eg sniffles) then thats a different matter.

Chickens may be living breathing creatures but they are still subject to the sales of good act, all purchases should be fit for purpose.

Your chicken obviously was not thus you are entitled to a refund or replacment. That is the law.

You are not being unreasonable. When Glencroft poultry delivered my four new girls they said if anything happened to any of them in the first 28 days, they would be replaced. That is what I would expect of a good breeder. A good breeder should want to know if any of their stock is ill, not just dismiss it.
