Filling raised beds

Recommended Posts

So I have been a bit held up with allotment plans as my sone has been in hospital the last few weeks. So were now running around like fools trying to prep the site for sowing.

We have rotovated the plot and put down raised beds which were now in the process off filling. So far I have stuck in shop bought compost, and Im getting a load of topsoil delivered. I had been saving up all my chicken poo in a wheelbarrow, (just poo nothing else from the cube trays) and I have dumped this in the beds that I will be putting my strawberry plants in. And I have also today dug out the top few inches of my chicken run which is a combination of poo and hempcore and a iny bit of soil (cant believe how much the 'soil' level has risen in the last year) and distributed this amongst all the beds (except where I will be planting carrots) But now I have just had a freak out that its going to be to strong or harmfull to the fruit and veg as I dont think it can be classed as 'rotted'. Is it going to be okay?

If you avoid beds where you will be growing root veg you should be ok, I am planning to do the same and will just ensure that the poo is covered by a good layer of soil so wont come in to direct contact with the plant roots until they have grown a lot and the poo has started to beak down

I've done the same Cat. I dug out as much of the couch grass as I could, placed the raised bed down, then put several layers of newspapers and empty feed bags down. Watered them well then added the gubbins from the bottom of the chicken run, veg peelings etc. Just going to add some topsoil and it should be great for peas and beans, brassicas etc. :D

I am afraid chicken manure is highly active and needs at least 6 months rotting down or it will burn any plants that come into contact with it.......

Okay Im going to just throw out the fresh poo that I stuck in the strawberry beds. but keep the stuff out the run base in but keep it to the bottom part of the beds, its going to be another good month before any plants go in and its pretty old and crumbly already anyway.
