Where to begin!

Last night I got in from work and asked hubby if he had checked the nest for eggs (in case the GNRs saw fit to start laying!) he said "no" so I took myself outside with my torch and went to the hatch and opened it and stroked the girls and looked under them.

I assume I put the hatch back in and turned it.

I then put the cat/fox deterrent on - I know 100% i did this as it makes a bleep noise 4 times and husband heard it and so did my two year old.

This morning I got up and looked outside and there were three chickens all outside free ranging - luckily inside the new netted area.

I assumed that even though it would be unusual for me to have, that I hadnt put the hatch thing back in the nest area and they had hopped out. So I went and looked and it was out on the floor.

I then went to turn off the fox/cat deterrent (as only have it on at night) and it was ALREADY off!!!!

So I dont know what has gone on, there are no signs anyone been in but doesnt mean to say they havent. Have I slept walked? Do I have amazing super chickens that can open latces and turn off deterrents?

I feel so terrible for them as they must have been freezing - feel so guilty.

All three of my girls seemed to escape the confines of their new Walk-in-Run yesterday, as I found them wandering around the veg-patch when I got home from work. Turns out my 4-year-old had been up to check for eggs and all three chooks saw their chance when she opened the door of the run and made a bolt for it . Who said chickens have small brains :?:.

Undeterred by three chickens racing past her little legs, she proceeded to check for eggs anyway. Unfortunately she then left the egg-port door on the floor of the run, but did manage to shut the run door on her way out! Result, the girls couldn't have got back in their run, even if they wanted too . Still, no harm done, she returned with two lovely eggs and the chickens got some unexpected free-ranging in the garden.
