when are chicks old enough to go outside at night?

Recommended Posts

Now this wouldn't have been an issue but after weeks of being really unwell ( i haven't even made it onto the forum) I've discovered I'm pregnant ( exciting) :D , and unfortunately my much loved chicks x5 which are currently living in the house are making me feel even worse. Im cleaning them every day and no one else comments on the smell but to me its just nauseating. :vom: ( but then everything is at the mo.)

I've put them out during the day since the weekend as its been nice and sunny but brought them back in late afternoon. they are fully feathered and are looking really good and I feel guilty that im considering kicking them out into the eglu earlier than I had planned. :( but I dont want them to be cold .

Advice please as Im feeling really selfish that I want them out the house.

If they're fully feathered they should be fine from eight weeks and onwards. I know how you feel regarding the smell and the mess, I moved my four week old chicks out of the house to the garage yesterday and it was such a relief to be able to hoover up all the Easibed that was littering every room of the house!

i've had three children and every thing that made me sick during pregnancy, food, smells ect, has made me feel sick ever since and my youngest child is 2.

we got our second parrot b4 i knew i was pregnant with third child, we kept him in the bedroom to start with, just until we had made slow intro to other parrot. His poo's were worse than the other parrots, and it was a disgusting noise when he did it. This made me sick every morning while i was pregnant until we moved him to new room. but i couldn't even look at my new parrot with out being sick. i hoped that after baby was born i'd be able to look at him but the sick feeling never went away.

i was really upset, as i love birds and pets, luckly a relative offer to buy both of them, cuz they had bonded. we agreed, i was very upset but slightly relieved.

i was worried when get my chickens i would feel the same, but i didn't, hooray !

i hope you get back to normal soon, not everyone suffers as bad as me.

Congratulations, it this your first baby.

Congrats on the baby news :D . You've seen my set-up Ruth.......the chicks are in the utility room for 3 weeks then go out to one of the runs within the garage, so they're quite sheltered. I think if the eglu was in a covered or sheltered spot they would be ok, but I wouldn't have them in an exposed eglu at 5 weeks. I take the bars out until 6/7 weeks and put loads of straw in for them to snuggle into.....they all snuggle into each other anyway.

oh...I read it as 5 weeks old.......how old are they?

Thanks folks,

I did think of your set up Fee but wasnt sure when you put yours out. They are 6 weeks old. Ive not got a clue about sexing them so im waiting till their bigger.

The eglu is in a walk in run thats tarpaulined( is that a word?) on the two open sides to shelter it and the other side is attached to the ferret shed. Of course I'll need to evict the banties from the eglu for a bit - but they lived happily in the ferret shed before the run was built.

This has curtailed my hatching plans for the year, so once this lot go out,the week old babies that are under the lamp just now will be my lot for the year I think.
