Kettles

Recommended Posts

:D:D:D

right, me and kev have just been talking eco living and carbon footprinting

good grief - we have a varied and excting life dont we :lol:

so we got talking about kettles :D

which is the most eco freindly?

and "electric plug in" one - or a "sit on the top of the stove and whistles when done" one?

I think (dunno really :? ) that a "sit on the stove" is better for the environment, but then, dont know why, and also dont know of a brill eco friendly kettle to choose :?

any suggestions?

:D

Not sure about kettles, but maybe keep the kettle for when larger amount of water needed, but use one of those Tefal 'One Cup' thingys ?

Ah, googled it and it's a tefal 'Quick Cup'

*Linky thing*

My Dad was given one of these - it's good, just a little frustrating as it obviusly fills the cup a bit slower than a kettle does

Whilst googling I also found this one didn't know there was such a thing as an eco kettle!)

*2nd Linky thing*

A cooker on the stove definitely wouldn't be more eco-wotsit for me as I'd invariably forget about it, let the water boil dry, and, er burn the house down. (Or at the very least leave it boiling on the cooker for longer than strictly necessary)

Trust me they whistle so loud that you CAN'T ignore them. They are definately the Eco friendly option for me as the Aga is hot and already using electricity (although I have it switched off for more time that its on and it NEVER cools down). Whereas the Electric kettle would need plugging in and use more electricity.

We have one of these, & we love it! Although it doesn't get quite to boiling point (I think), it's still hot enough for a cuppa, and given that you don't have to actually wait around for the kettle to boil before you make your one or two cups of tea, it's quicker in our house at least! Also safer for the children to make hot drinks as they don't have to lift the kettle.

It only pours (just short of) a mug of water at a time, so you just press the button to top the cup up if needs be. Great plan to have it stop automatically though, means I don't flood the kitchen.....!

thanks for your insight :D

I didnt know there was an official "eco" kettle either 8)

i wonder if it is as good as it could be, or if they are just playing on the name :?

I like the idea of an "on the stove" kettle, it would alos get rid of one of our many plug-in gadgets that clutter up our rather huge but always untidy kitchen :D

i shall continue my quest :D

I have recently acquired a new stove top whistling kettle and love it. It has made me more aware of only using the required amount of water because it takes longer to boil. It has the added benefit of fresh water being used each time which makes a better cup of tea :D

I suspect that the problem with the eco-kettle, one cup idea is that it is a lot more complex inside than a straightforward kettle so when it goes wrong (inevitable in this day and age) you will be throwing away a bunch of plastic and metal, whereas a top-of-the-stove kettle will go on forever nearly and can be passed down as a family heirloom. So you have to factor that in when deciding which is more eco-friendly!

In our house, electric kettles have been only marginally more successful than toasters in durability (i.e. lasting only about 2 years per kettle vs 18 months for toasters).

The Tefal One Cup works perfectly well with out a filter in, we have a jug filter anyway so we fill it up from there. we've had one since just after they came out as I was sick to death of the boys reboiling kettle after kettle when they forgot they'd put the old one on. We tried a stove top on and I did really like it but again with teenagers they always filled it to the top for one cup and so wasted water and energy like crazy.

YOU HAVE A CRISP CUPBOARD??????

Oh I remember when I used to have a crisp cupboard - I loved my crisp cupboard...

I'm also remembering why I no longer have a crisp cupboard - it's coming back to me......ah yes that was what made me a size 28.

CHRISTIAN - step away from the crisp cupboard!!!
