Old Speckled Hen
Just come back from walking in the Tramuntanas in Mallorca to find:- Nesting in our nest box. The female has been in and out all morning collecting moss, taking it out again, rearranging everything. It's difficult to get a decent picture as she moves so fast. Colour seems to have given up on the camera too which is a pity. I'm very excited. Can't wait for little eggies Edited July 1, 2009 by Guest

Gamebird
How lovely. You've got your very own Spring Watch. Do you feel a bit Bill Oddie?
Old Speckled Hen
Do you feel a bit Bill Oddie? I hear a rumour he's been demoted for the next series. He was going a bit strangely tourettish at times. I'm watching the webcam now. It beats "normal" telly but how I'll cope with any chicks that die I don't know. I'll want to be up there rescuing them. We have 2 sparrows on camera in another nest and hubby is putting a camera over the swallow's nest at the weekend. Do you think I should get out more? The Dogmother
Lovely pictures DA, do keep us posted. I had to take down my nestign box as my last cat was intent on eating all the babies
Minnie the Moocher
Tell me about your camera, DA. Is it wireless? How is it powered? Was it 'spensive?
Old Speckled Hen
Hi Minnie They are great fun Camera and nest box were a present to my hubby, from http://www.handykam.com/shop-buy-products/pine-nest-box-camera-system-NB1CCK.html but they do sell the camera separately. I looked at much better kit (wider angle of view and better colour) at the Ideal home show from http://www.mccam.co.uk/ These are ludicrously expensive but although not advertised on the site they do sell just the camera for £50 and you can make your own box up. I might treat myself to one for next year. Don't use a wireless set up as the frequency is too close to that used by wireless routers and you get a lot of interference. Old Speckled Hen
The nest is looking more nest-like rather than a mass of moss She has been bringing in more grass and some sheeps' wool this morning and on a few occasions she has called to her mate who has fed her a tasty spider or two at the nest hole. He's not allowed in yet, even though he has tried to join her once or twice only to be chased out sharpish with much screeching from her. Last night was the first night she roosted in the nest box I'll post again when we get some
Old Speckled Hen
This is so frustrating Grrrrrrrr I'm sure there are eggs in here, possibly five. Female roosts here at night and pays a lot of attention to covering up the nest cup when she leaves in the morning. She pops in periodically and throws more nesting material just anywhere. Mrs Sparrow is incubating three maybe four eggs. Last year this box was full practically to the brim and any activity was largely invisible until just before fledging. This year we can see better as there is less nesting material.
