Copyright laws

Recommended Posts

Does it break copyright laws to use an image found on google on a personal blog or website, although this may be used to promote a 'service' of some description? I.e, cartoon like drawing of a chicken that i wish to use on my site offering chicken sitting service and eglu hire.

I don't want to have some angry person filing a law suit against me because it is their image!!!

It breaks the law unless it specifically states that you may use the image or you have permission from the owner.

Even if the site you get the image from has NO copyright statement their material is still protected by their copyright.

You need to search for Copyright free images or ask permission to use the image, you never know the answer might be yes!

There are copyright free images, but you have to subscribe to banks of them first. Phil's an illustrator and often uses them for reference for his work.

Any others need to be used with permission, it's a sticky subject. My ex is a journalist and an expert in intellectual property; I can ask him if you need further information.

Sorry Steph but they don't have to apply or pay. From the link you sent

"Copyright is an automatic right and arises whenever an individual or company creates a work. To qualify, a work should be regarded as original, and exhibits a degree of labour, skill or judgement"

Actually I like that link - was rather easy to read, might use it with year 11!

Wikimedia commons has thousands of images released under the GNU Free Documentation License, which lets people copy, redistribute and modify a work and requires all copies and derivatives to be available under the same license. Copies may also be sold commercially, but, if produced in large quantities (greater than 100), the original document must be made available to the work's recipient
