Karen & co.
I thought I'd put this question to folk who may know the answer OH and I are thinking of having fitted wardrobes in our bedroom at the moment we have 2 chunky freestanding wadrobes (by the way OH has a double full to bursting, and I have a single with space ) we also have two chest of drawers. Now the question is would fitted wardrobes be more space efficient? and are any companies better than others? Years ago, OH with a little help from ES at the age of 5 put some Wickes ones in Daniels bedroom, not expensive as they were for a child, and when we drive past our old house they are still there and that was 12 years ago! Thanking anyone who answers this rather rambly post Karen x
Olly
Yes, I definitely think they are more space-efficient, especially if you have floor-to-ceiling. I had them made by a builder at my last house, it was a straight run across one end of the room. In this house I bought Ikea wardrobes, the doors weren't quite to my taste but I couldn't afford anything else - they go from floor to ceiling so there are no gaps, and the top shelves hold all sorts of things. I like a double rail - i.e. one high and one lower in the same wardrobe - for shirts etc and then a high one for trousers and dresses. I've also got a single wardrobe with wire baskets in and a pull-out shelf where I keep the hairdryer and all the stuff I need in the morning. It made such a difference to the bedroom, but obviously once you've got them fitted you're stuck with it, I can only have the bed in one place now. chickenanne
Definitely more space efficent. We have some all the way across one wall, and with them, we don't need any other storage in the room (drawers etc) as you can get them with internal fitments to suit you. We got ours from B&Q, basically becuase they fitted the space exactly we didn't need to get them made. And they are much MUCH easier to assemble than you'd belive possible: we had ours done in a day easily.
Cinnamon
They are much more space efficient. Hubby made ours for us, & fitted them out inside with the Ikea range,so we have lots of useful things like pull out laundry baskets too Take a look at the Ikea site, as they do all the internal bit & pieces separately,& they are great. Lewis
I used to have fitted wardrobes along one wall of my room up to the ceiling, they were HUGE! They were good because they had sliding doors, with rails, shelves and draws inside, and it just meant you couldn't see any of the mess when they were shut. I got rid of them and got 3 double wardrobes We always used to hide in them for hide and seek
fluffyknickers
Last year we got three quotes for them, sharps, a local company and sliderobes. We decided to go with sharps and I adore them and makes the bedroom so much neater and you can design them how you want. Michelle
Seagazer
We got ours from Hammonds. They are very nice but the only thing with ours is that they don't go the ceiling. They are fitted to the ceiling but the top bit is false so its a bit of a waste. We knew this before we ordered them, my OH just preferred this company. But I do wish I had that extra bit of space... Guest
I guess they are more space efficient - I happen to think they are hideous though. The "master" bedroom in my house has them - I keep a lot in the but sleep in another room! If all of the rooms had them I would have ripped them out! I've decided to keep them though and I would like to update the doors as they are double hideous (truly I've not met anyone who liked these!). However whilst they are there that will never be more than a spare room - even though it has a sink in (part of a built in dressing table unit which matches the hideous wardrobes!!!). These are probably 40 years old though but very well built and seem like good quality - kind of thing that will last a lifetime.
Shirl
I'm with you Pengy, we ripped them out when we moved into our house. It makes me laugh when the estate agents advertise them like they are great to have. I guess lots of peope do like them though.
jenimac
We have them in our main bedroom and i hate them! All the other bedrooms have wardrobes and I like to move them around and not have to keep room layout the same. Worst still ours have mirror doors so I dress in mornings with lights off. chickweed
I have known condensation to be a problem when wardrobes are fitted to outside walls, resultng in damp and mould on clothing.
