kitbag Posted April 26, 2009 Share Posted April 26, 2009 i am having that problem too! I am doing GCSEs and and i find it really hard to sit down and look at books and things like that. I find teaching my Mum things. That way she will ask questions, that I wont really know the answer to, so i will know to go and revise! Past papers also work in the same way. What are you struggling with most? I find bitesize can be very useful for subjects such as geography and history. Lewis Posted April 26, 2009 Share Posted April 26, 2009 I write equations and key words on post-its and put them where I look all the time - on my wardrobe, door and on mirrors so you can revise while brushing your teeth! I normally sit and write loads of notes from my notes, the textbook and the revision guidesyou can get. I think you're doing AS / A2 because you said something about uni ? Kirstine Posted April 26, 2009 Share Posted April 26, 2009 Here's a tip my O level Chemistry teacher taught us and I still use it for postgrad exams. It probably works best for science. Divide your subject up into chunks (larger than a lesson, about the size of a textbook chapter). Make notes on each chunk but no more than a side of A4. You only have to write down the stuff you don't know, and you might have to write really small, but it is psychologically important to make it look manageable! It can be time-consuming, but you will be taking in what you are writing, and it is encouraging to find out how much you actually do know. Then you can read the whole course over quite quickly. When you have got to grips with your A4 notes, make new notes, but this time on index cards (or try to put the whole course on one piece of A4). Again you will find that you know most of it, but its a few bits (the equations, maybe) that are evading you. Then learn the stuff on the index cards. Post its on the mirror sound good, too! Ain't Nobody Here Posted April 26, 2009 Share Posted April 26, 2009 Thanks, Chris . I'm treading a fine line between gentle nagging (which makes him defensive) and jokey reminders on a daily basis . I have no way of knowing if his revision is going well or not but he has had some good results in class tests recently (after doing really badly in his prelims ). Next year he's doing Advanced Highers - don't know what your equivalent is? Ms Marple, that's a good point - he seems to be on his PC every time I look into his room . I worry that it's just too hard to resist. I've suggested putting a timer on it when he's on study leave but I know he'll just find other things to waste time if he really wants to. ubereglu Posted April 26, 2009 Share Posted April 26, 2009 I tend to write notes by using revision books or my actual class books depending on the subject, then I write out the notes again in a shortened form and read over them aloud and record them and listen to them. Martin B Posted April 26, 2009 Share Posted April 26, 2009 Well, revision. The key is lots of it but in little amounts, don't over do it for hours and hours. Your brain will stop taking in information after about 15 minutes, have regular breaks drink fluids and look at past papers which you can easily download off the internet.
