Dog got Clucky.

Recommended Posts

Mum here.

I came home from work at lunch time today and Clucky was perching inside the coop. I brought her in and gave her some Garlic infused cooled boiled water. She took eight syringes and let me bathe her eyes. I then put her in the run and took the cover off so the sun could shine through. She then opened her eyes fully, the pupils are less dilated and the iris is more than just a little visible. She sat on the perch, turning to watch her friends, for an hour. She isn't bumping into things anymore and is more steady on her feet. Fingers crossed, we may be reaching a turning point.

Thank you all for your lovely words of comfort, support and advice. It means a lot to both of us. We'll keep you posted. xx :)

I'm also glad to hear she's doing well. The first 48 hours are the most 'iffy' as this is the time when shock can set in and really finish a bird off - she's got through that and she's obviously recovering, so I'll hazard a guess and bet a glass of ribena that she'll be just fine

You sound as if you've all done a sterling job, it's lovely to hear that people care about their birds so much.

Kudos, and good luck!

Well, I went to open the pop hole this morning and all six girls trooped out, and went to the feeder. Clucky is eating and drinking, and, strangely enough, laying! I think she may have lost some sight in one eye, as the pupil is still dilated and she seems to have lost her close range vision as she can't seem to aim right when pecking on the ground, although she seems to be able to get it right when eating from the feeder or their treats bowl, (they had pasta with chicken spice and garlic for tea).

I am really proud of Ellie, I think she has handled the situation with compassion and maturity. Thankyou for all your support, it has really meant a lot to the whole family. It has been a horrible experience, to go out and only see five girls, when you know one is poorly indoors.

Hi! Ellie here. We've got Cluckles eating solid foods and drinking loads. We think she is blind in one eye as she doesn't move her head if something goes near her eye.She is eating solid food ON HER OWN which i think is fab and i think she would have gone already if she had to go. Things are looking good, she is eating and drinking quite well but she can't eat off the floor as her eyesight is poor at the minute. I think she has made a miraculous recovery and hope her eyes recover aswell as her other chicken body parts!!!!!!!

Thankyou all for your your lovely replies, it really helps and is comforting. It's nice to know that we've all experienced the same kind of thing. Thanks again. I hope to hear about your girlies too, now Clucky is better ( nearly) i want to hear about yours!!!!!!!

Heck just read this thread. What a story, I hope little Clucky is doing OK still. You have worked so hard with her. I was so touched to read about your other girls looking after her because I thought that chickens only bullied the weak ones.

Fingers crossed for good news still from you both. :D

Oh fingers crossed clucky will be ok now??

Must say although dogs will be dogs etc the dog owners do have a duty to keep their dogs under control. If you know who did this would be worth having a polite word with them just to make them aware of this fact, and in future when they are passing by your garden that they do indeed put the dog on its lead for safety. If they dont comply would let police know who it is, if you do know for sure??

Or put a notice up and state the irresponsible dog owners who injured our chickens etc etc(depends on how you want to word it mind....)?

Good luck indie

Clucky is still progressing well. Her eyes are back to normal, or at least appear to be, and she moves her head away if you put your hands near her face, her pecking is more accurate too. She has stopped laying, as I thought she might. I am still a bit concerned over her reluctance to perch, and she is still first in to the pop hole every evening. She joins in with the rest of the group, and engages in the 'argy bargy' for a peck at a cucumber, but I think it will be some time before she is back to her normal self. But, so far so good, and to think she was within a moment from death. Where there is life I suppose......

Many thanks to you all.

Margot. :anxious:

Just caught up with this thread, what an amazing chicken!

Well done to Ellie and you for nursing her back to health.

Did you ever catch up with the dog's owners? They may not have realised what happened. Have you been able to secure you/your neighbours garden where the damned dog got in?

The dog was being walked by grandparents. I know the owners live close by, but I don't know exactly which house. My own neighbour said that that particular dog is always on a lead, but, that day, the people walking the dog let him off. The garden is as secure as it can be. I am surrounded by six foot high privet hedges and within the hedges is a wire fence, the front wall is also tall, and the gates are always closed, so I'm not sure what else I can do.

I haven't seen the dog (or owners) around here since, so I imagine they know what happened. Their grandchildren certainly did, because it was their screaming that brought us all out.

As for my girl, yes, she is remarkable, she wants to be a vet one day, she always has, and she has shown her ability to care and have infinate patience. Clucky herself is doing well, but she is still under the weather. The other ladies were out until eight in the enclosed run, but Clucky preferred to perch in the coop from before seven. It will take time I suppose, it was a terrible ordeal.

Well, a fair bit of time has gone by and Clucky is well and laying a big brown egg daily. We think she has lost the sight in one eye. She looks at things with her left eye, turning her head to see, but, she is well, eating and laying like she used to. My girls never fail to amaze me. They are intelligent, wonderful creatures, and I would advise anyone considering keeping girls, to do it. Our girls have changed our lives, (and the lives of our friends/neighbours, because they only eat free range eggs now) for the better.

Thanks again for your support,

Margot and Ellie.
