Rhapsody
Subsidising solid gold property portfolois for these civil servants is something I've ranted about for years. And the expense claims seems to be rubbing our noses in it rather! @jackiepoppies are you still paying UK tax even though your sig says you live in France? Your accountant needs firing if so! jackiepoppies
Hi Rhapsody, Apparently my Civil Service pension can only be paid in the UK but my meagre state pension is being paid into my bank a/c here. As for tax.... I am ashamed to say, I haven't got a clue All I know is that we are about 30% worse off now due to exchange rates I'd take a bet that hasn't affected Euro MPs or their expense accounts Jx
Old Speckled Hen
Have been telling OH about this thread. He has a rather excellent theory. Rather than all these MPs having 2nd homes in London and claim crazy amounts, why don't they set up MP housing, basically like nurses accommodation or halls of residence. They can book a room when they need it, it can have a bed, a desk, on-suite shower room, a shared kitchen etc. Would save us as tax payers a fortune. Agree with the above, why not make Buckingham Palace into halls of residence? there must be loads of rooms not used on a regular basis. Good security, walkable to Westminster, loads of parking space at the front. Marvellous idea. I think we should start a petition on the number 10 website. I can just see the headlines now "Chicken keepers want MP's cooped up" How about using the Olympic Village when it's all over?
earthmam1
Hi I am hopping mad I rather like the idea of buying up one of the inner city "sink" tower blocks , charging rent and then telling them they would have to get to "work on the tube. That would sort them out. sue
jackiepoppies
No, no, no..............Have a 'Bike Pool' where they can use the bike to get to and from their digs Supports green issues too Jx

It does seem that we have not heard the end of the "snouts in troughs" affair. sue
Cate in NZ
Cate, Are you saying your politicians are beyond reproach and they have no skeletons in their cupboards Jx Oh, no, I'm absolutely sure that there's a few who've got some humungous great skeletons clunking around. But I remember a fellow forum member quite rightly telling me off when I went on to an anti-politicians rant many, many moons ago, he said then, that most politicians have at heart the best interests of their consituents and the populace as a whole, sure they want to earn a living at it, and so they should...it's a job after all. And overall I agree with that. There are the rotten politicians for sure, whether because of lack of motivation, morality or intellect and NZ has it's fair share of them, I'm absolutely sure of that. But, most are well-intentioned, and hope in their own way to have a positive impact on society, no matter which country they live in. BUT, this latest British MPs tax expenses sleaze scandal stuff is not new, it happens every year, and every year it just seems to get worse...yet nothing changes. To me that seems more like wholesale corruption, rather than a few bad apples. The economy is in recession, everyone else has to tighten their belts...but MPs can still continue to rake in taxpayers money to fund their extravagant lifestyles Anyway, NZ politicians can't afford huge expenses, 2nd world economy and all that malarkey, and the country is still slowly making reparations to the Maori for all the lands that were stolen from them by the first European settlers Still glad I left though
Ain't Nobody Here
So now the Tories are being exposed .... Oliver Letwin has claimed to get an underground pipe fixed. Under his tennis court .

Looney
Well we couldn't have his tennis court being flooded could we?! I've been talking about this whole expenses shamble with OH. The rules are just soooooo rubbish that some MPs have been able to claim what they want AND for it to be eligible expenditure. The sooner the rules are changed, the better. On the other hand, if I was offered certain perks through work I'm sure I would take them wholeheartedly. If someone offered to cover my travel for example... BUT again, I wouldn't be expecting for work to pay for a wide screen tv, underground pipes, fake beams for my ceiling! Nor would I be claiming for stuff that I could afford without even noticing the expense - thinking in particular of a certain MP that is a millionaire
Tiggy
my OH has to go to London fairly regularly and the faculty pays his expenses but it only covers train fare or milage & B&B, then again he is only training doctors to save peoples lives and not running the country
jackiepoppies
They're (the politicins) all holding their hands up trying to justify their claims and at the same time saying the rules must be changed...............who made the rules in the first place I spent 10.5 years driving 50 miles each way on shift work as a Civil Servant Did I get mileage expenses Did I heck Jx
jackiepoppies
SOME politicians have decided they want an increase in pensions of 7% Am I going to get that as well ................I don't think so Jx

House them altogether - in one big tower block. Basic accomodations only. Seems quite fair to me. Makes too much sense to be taken up. Valkyrie
MOD barracks would suffice - I bet they wouldn't want to live in places that the military have to put up with. Of course, they should pay US (us I mean not America) for the privilege of living in cheap housing.
