CJ's little adventure

Recommended Posts

Some of you will remember that we adopted CJ from the SSPCA a couple of months ago - she's a Sebright, a very small tight-feathered, long-legged non-broody person.

On Friday evening we realised that we hadn't seen CJ for a while. DH and I felt a bit guilty as neither of us had totted up the chickens since Tuesday or Wednesday and hadn't noticed she was missing.

On Saturday morning, there was still no sign so I went around the garden upending things that might have fallen on her, peering into things she might have drowned in, looking behind places she might have got stuck, you know the routine. No CJ.

We wondered whether she had just gone on her travels, after all when we adopted her, the SSPCA had said she had been found wandering.

We felt sad, and were convinced we had seen the last of CJ.

On Sunday morning, I came home from church to find CJ sunbathing on the lawn! She was quite hungry and thirsty but otherwise fine.

We locked her in the sin bin, with two broodies who were pacing up and down getting cured - our sin bin is quite spacious.

On Monday evening all 3 of them ganged up on DH and sweet-talked him into letting them out. However, when released CJ got a certain gleam in her eye and set off in a determined manner, so DH followed her.

Along the drive, past a barn, into a very old rickety barn filled with broken glass from an old greenhouse, to the back of the barn, into a disused cupboard WHERE HER EGGS WERE!

The cunning lass had decided to be a Mum!

Unfortunately, we can't be having any more chickens as we are full up, and the cockeral is a Welsummer (which would make admittedly interesting, but not very saleable chicks) so back to the sin bin she went.
