Rev Bott
Hi there, new to the forum so be gentle. Have had chickens for a few months which were bought from a farm and vaccinated. We had a hen go broody and she successfully hatched 6 chicks. I also managed to hatch 4 Pekin Bantams in an incubator and are now in a brooder. Would like some advice on how to go about vaccinating the chicks and what stuff to get. Is there a jab that can do the lot or is it individual products? could do with some advice if possible? Check out the farm - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Funky-Chicken-Farm/89267388022?ref=ts
Egluntyne
There is no need to vaccinate a few back yard chicks Rev Bott. It is a complicated process anyway, involving not injections as you might suppose, but additives put in drinking water on particular days and spraying the chicks with substances. on others. Also, the vaccines are only available in industrial quantities and on prescription from a vet. Welcome to the forum by the way.
Griffin
I recently considered buying the Mareks vaccine for my chicks. It comes in batches of 100, has to be used within 6 hours of opening, must be administered in the first few days and costs £30 If I hatched a lot of Sebrights or Silkies which are particularly susceptible to Mareks I probably would buy it but a lot would go to waste. Lewis
As Egluntine and Griffin have said, they shouldn't need doing in a garden situation. You have 10 chicks so you could buy a massive dose and waste 90% of it, and it would only cost £3 per head. If you have somewhere near you, you could share it and use it all up quickly. Might be worth a call to the vet if you still want to vaccinate them.
Rev Bott
Thanks for these replies, thats good to know. We have done the lice powder on them and have nursed one back to life that looked pretty sick. We also cured scaly foot on our Bantams using olive oil and surgical spirit. It seems to me if you keep an eye on them and keep everything fairly clean you can keep on top of things. Thanks again.
