Not eating pellets

Recommended Posts

Our girls don't seem to be eating their Omlet pellets. Quick enough to take a handful of corn late afternoon/early evening, or some mealworm, but not at all interested in their pellets.

We're doing everything by the book in terms of treats so I know they're not filling up on them in favour of their 'good' food, they just don't seem to like the pellets!

Also, they're on bark chippings and are constantly scrabbling around for bugs, perhaps their tums are full of grubs?!

Hi,

Are they laying yet? If not, then they won't be eating a lot - their appetites will increase ten fold once they start - I couldn't believe it!

They may also be saving themselves for their treats...

I would withold all treats for a couple of days (hard, I know - they have a way of making you feel guilty!) and they will soon rediscover the pellets!

Thanks for your reply. They have started laying, well two of them at least. Both Tuesday and yesterday we had two eggs, and we've had one so far today. That's why I'm a bit surprised at the lack of eating going on :?

I won't give them any more treats today (though was planning on giving them their Flubenvet on some mealworms, I might still do that) and we'll see how they go.

Just noticed your signature - the chooks have only just arrived and you are getting eggs already!! Lucky thing - I had to wait weeks!! (But was worth the wait... :D )

Give them a little bit of time to settle in as well - everything is new and a bit strange. I am sure the food will suddenly start to disappear - they won't go hungry!

C&T is right, with hold your treats for a while and then when you reintroduce them try to give them late afternoon so that they do all their proper food during the day....

You can still start your flubenvet just put it on a quarter of a grape and pop it in!

Thanks guys :) We managed to give them some Flubenvet on the grapes so at least that's started now. And they seem to have eaten more of their pellets today as well.

We do have some layers mash already (what *haven't* I bought?!) so I might try that tomorrow, just for a change.

I started mine with pellets and then decided to let them have some mash as a change. Trouble is, they absolutely go potty for the mash now and won't eat the pellets until the mash has all gone :D Also their poos seem to smell much more now they are having mash :( (anyone ever experienced this?) - guess Garlic Powder will be the next purchase :D
