what do you do with your kids in half term while you work?!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am looking to go back to work but I worry about what to do with my daughter in the school hols if im working?! i know this probably sounds mad to many people who have to deal with this every holiday time but she is my only daughter and i haven't had to deal with holiday care before. The nursery she goes to also closes for holidays.

any thoughts gratefully welcome as i really would like to get back to work and be me for a short time! lol! :D

Hi there, not mad at all! I'm lucky as I have my Mum most of the time, I tend to try and save my leave for the holidays and take a couple of days here and there so my Mum doesn't have to have them all the time. Other than that I juggle it with the other mums - I quite often have my friends children for a day or two at a time so they can work and they return the favour - bit easier when they're a bit older I guess. Failing that, don't know what you're planning to do, but you could always try and get a job with a school! Or at a playschool or something like that where you're either off for the hols or can take your babe with you.

Good luck, it is nice being a grown up for part of the time!

Obviously I can be left on my own, but when I was younger I used to go to my nans, a holiday school thing attached to school or there are other week long things like cricket (I HATED it  ), drama or going to friends houses.

Round here the council run a lot of 'play schemes' at the local leisure centres - not all sport based - and the sports clubs run 'camps' that are.

Can you swap child care with a friend ie you take some time off and so does your friend on different days and you take turns looking after the children?

Holidays are tricky - you think when they go to school that it'll be plain sailing, but the problems just change! Hope you find something that suits you both.

I take time off to be with Rosie when I can, but only get the statutory holiday allowance of 20 days.

We are lucky in the the local sports centre (we are members) runs a fantastic holiday camp for children; they get to swim every day, do sports, competitions, crafts, roller disco. far more fun than I have at work

Grandparent's/God Parent's (that's what they're for)

The "Bratz" school runs a holiday club for 4 of the 8 weeks in the Summer which most of the children attend and also clubs at Easter and Christmas.

We used to find that half-terms were the worst (always with an extra day tagged on at the start or finish of the previous week). None of the holiday schemes seem to operate during half term and 3 half term breaks are almost equal to a full time employment holiday year.

Home-working makes this easy these days but used to be a challenge.

I found my kids didn't want to do the same thing all holiday (not unreasonable of them) so I tried to vary it.

If you are taking some time off to be at home (or can work at home some days) suggest day swaps with other working mums.

There's a wide variety of holiday clubs around many have themes see what would work best for your kids - these cost though

Child minders often provide some level of holiday cover

Find responsible teenagers to look after your children (Sarah's daughter might be available :D ) best to work out some possible activities and leave them with instructions.

When I worked full time I found school holidays a real challenge! As everyone has said above! Some nurserys do stay open throught the holidays, and some employers run playschemes. Contact your local council to find out what is available. I used all sorts - friends, family, playschemes, taking him into work. I have to say I hated it and won't be doing it again with my two youngest, I don't care how skint we are! :? Really hope you find something - it's not easy, despite what the government say! xx

oh I discovered these at my local council when mine were small it was called a Closed scheme so the children were signed in in the morning and signed out (it was really strict.they only allowed the person you named to collect as the only one who could collect....once my husband went to collect them instead of me and they did ring me to check & asked him for ID and fortunately they are ringers for their dad) and it was great value. In the morning they did all painting /reading and gentler things, in the afternoon it was mayhem bouncy slides/soft tennis etc if they wanted quieter things they could. Mine usse to come home wrecked and when I went to fetch them they were never to be found as they were far too busy. That was a few years back.

Book early I had to queue to drop them off it was very popular 8.30 to 3.30pm

good luck
