Cyber Chook
Having had a few softies recently, I'm adding limestone flour to the evening mash, which seems to be working. I read a comment a while ago, I think from Egluntine, about adding cod liver oil at the same time for the Vitamin D to enable calcium absorption. I bought a 2-litre bottle of cod liver oil from a horse feed supplier this weekend. I've got no idea, though, about how much I ought to be putting in, and for how long. Can anyone advise, on how much limestone flour AND cod liver oil to give?
The Dogmother
It would have been Egluntine who mentioned that. I'm never terribly precise when I add it - I add roughly a dessert spoon full of limestone flour to the pellets and a 'dab of cod liver oil. If you put the oil in first and shake it around, it coats the pellets and then the limestone flour sticks to it.
Cyber Chook
Thanks Claret . Would that amount do for five chooks? And do you do that every day, routinely, or just for a few days until the shells harden up?
The Dogmother
I usually add Limestone Flour whenever I remember it, which is mostly, the cod liver oil gets added less often.
Cyber Chook
Okay, thank you again Claret, that sounds like my kind of memory/regime, and will do nicely. BTW, I see you've got a lurcher. I've pined for a lurcher for... 30 years, come to think of it, ever since I trained as a veterinary nurse, and we used to have to attend all the greyhound races (a vet had to always be present, apparently). We used to get a lot of greyhounds as patients. I fell in love with soppy, big-baby greyhounds then, and lurchers are just as lovely. But we live in London, and I'd be the only one walking it. I know they're lazy so and so's, but I have a bit of a health issue that leaves me tired, so Mr Cyber Chook Says No To be fair, he's more of an animal tolerator than animal lover, so I'm doing pretty well so far on the menagerie front. One day, when we move to the country... Caroline
The Dogmother
I wouldn't worry about being too conscientious about it, just so long as you add a dab more often than not. I find that cod liver oil works best in a wet mash/porridge; I make this up every weekend with all the dregs from the feeders - stuff that they've picked around. I add some goodies, warm water and resurrect left-overs as highly desirable porridge Lurchers are just the loveliest dogs (well, i am biased ) I was brought up with my grandfolks cocker and springer spaniels, but have always had lurchers of my own. Interestingly this is the first puppy I've had - they others have all been rescues or fosters. You are right - they are 40mph couch potatoes who love sprinting and sleeping in equal measures. Ideal if you can't give a dog loads of exercise. I hope you get to have one of your own one day.
