What things do chickens need inside their house?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Sorry for asking another question!!!!

We will soon have a stone chicken house (internal measurements are 3 metres by 3 metres) in our garden which will house to start with, 6 hens.

We were wondering what things do the hens need in there to perch on / nest in? All of the chicken coops we have seen online are little things which dont seem to have much 'inside' for the hens, just places for them to sit down and go to sleep. theres 4 spaces in the wall for nesting in. (i think theres pics linked below of it) Do they need perches high up? will tree branches do as we can chop down some trees and get them for free! (very tight budget u see!!) Do we cover the entire stone floor with straw or just put that in their nesting spaces? Toys?? we are a bit isolated and our neighbours are all cattle farms and dont keep poultry so cant ask them for advice ! Theres a house in the next village with some chickens in their garden but dont like to just go and knock on their door and ask for advice! we can get by with our French (oh, we live in France), but its not good enough to ask detailed or technical questions yet! lol!

thanks once again! Our chickens will appreciate it

kindest regards

Perches can be old branches that would be fine and menas that you dont have to plane the edges of square wood! try to strip off any loose bark if you can. Try to use branches about 2" diameter

Apart from the nest boxes you neednt supply anything else in the house, they will use it only for sleeping and laying eggs in (and sulking if you upset them  )

You could put straw all over the floor but it is a big area  definitely put something under the perches, you will be amazed by how much poo a sleeping hen generates!

Hi both,

Keep asking the questions.

For the stone floor, I'd recommend using a horse bedding like Auboise (which is a French company :D ), its dead easy to poo pick and lasts well.

Your girls will appreciate perches of any description but if you are using tree branches, I'd remove the bark, as this will harbour red mites

A dust bath for them would be good too, an old tire can work well for this, or a large old plant pot, cat litter tray, anything really! And fill it with a soil/sand mix. They'll love it.

They will need a nest box for laying their eggs in (again filled with Auboise or similar) and perches to sleep on, however they need to be able to rest their chests whilst sleeping.

Hope the plans are going well.

Bonne chance! (I think that right?!?!? Spanish is more my game!)

Can't add much more to the excellent advice above  .

I have branches and an old garden bench in my run which they use all the time.

If they are going to be kept in there for any time (like when you are out), you can hang up veg for them to peck at - like corn on the cob, apples or any greens they like.

Some people use those dog treat balls and fill them with whatever their hens like.

I've seen bales of straw in some runs and large logs can be good too - they like scratching about under them for beasties and sitting on them too!
