Hi, Regan got better yesterday afternoon after her softee and this morning she had a couple of grapes and seemed fine. She poo'd normally. A few hours later, she was in the run looking very hunched up, eyes half closed. She expelled some clear liquid and then retired to the eglu. Her wings were hanging and she had she seemed quite clumsy - not that I've seen her normally on the bars. She settled down and shut her eyes. She ate a mealworm, and half a grape but refused water.

 

I went out to see her a while ago and she was in the nestbox although she was making efforts to get up and she got onto the bars and expelled another load of clear liquid- it looked like an egg but might have had some poo in it.

 

She's got her beak open and is breathing I think normally - that may be because it's hot.

 

Her ears have got white on them which I thought was odd and I checked Ophelia and she has white on her ears too so figuring that's normal.

 

I've never seen her stuggle so much and I know it can take them all day to get over having a softee but now I am not sure that's what it is as she's never taken to the nest, but also is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable and could it be something else?

 

I was going to put her in a catbox but my husband and mum both think that would stress her out and whatever she is suffering with, it's better she is in her normal surroundings.

 

She's wormed, vermexed and on exbatt crumbs.

 

Vet is off till Monday.

 

I'd appreciate any help or advice.

I'd give her some extra Calcium if you can get hold of some. Limestone Flour or Zolcal D, which is a liquid supplement and readily absorbed.

Hi,

 

Lifted her out of the nest and sat with her on the grass. Whether it is a softee or not she looks very unhappy. She actually has chronic diahorrea. She drank the equivalent of 1/2 a mug of water and ate a blade of grass (!) but won't eat anything else. The more I think about it she is just not well - it looks way worse than a softee.

 

I put her back in the nest box and she stood for ages, shutting her eyes as though she was in pain (as through she has cramps from the diahorrea) and then came back. I've left her to rest and will go out later to see how she is.

 

Keeping everything crossed for her.

Sounds as if a trip to the vet is required.

 

I'd worm her with Flubenvet rather than Verm-X when she gets over this too. It is much more effective.

Well, we spoke to the locum vet who said she was qualified to "do chickens". She said she was broody She then said, well, if she does die (so you die from being broody, right.), it's a good idea to get a post mortem. Seriously, would she have said that if I was talking about my cat?

 

She didn't even ask if she'd laid today or anything. Poor Regan has had another drink of water and we will have to keep going with that until Monday and see the vet that keeps chickens who I trust. Hopefully Regan will perk up by then.

This sounds very much like Miso (se"Miso's died") who was egg bound. Did the vet examine for an egg up her vent? Our vet automatically did this.

 

We do wish her well and hope she comes through.

She came out of the nest last night and stood around, still looking a bit hunched, but she had a drink on her own.

 

And, she's 10x better this morning. She isn't eating grapes yes, but mealworms were a hit and she had a bit of porridge.

 

We've had 2 eggs, and on inspection of the poo tray, I have discovered a lash!

 

Presumably it takes some time to full get over it but she looks more like the Regan we know and love!

 

Will keep an eye on her today and if she's still not interested in grapes tonight she'll be at the vets tomorrow just to make sure there's nothing more sinister.

 

I hope I am not counting chickens (yes, pun intended!) but I feel so relieved. I keep going out and cuddling her (she's not too impressed by that!)

Hi all,

 

Well she had a grape last night and this morning trundled out with her eglumates and headed straight for a grub!

 

Am at work today so will have to wait and see if she lays or not - but dare I say, it looks like she's over it. A relief for her and for me.

 

She's on flubenvert as of yesterday as well.
