Guest
Ok, now free-range chickens in a prison. Is that an Oxymoron?!? I just hope those young offenders will appreciate, love and look after those girls. Welll - they have got to be the safest chickens around - I doubt a fox could get over those walls! Louise I think you would be pleasantly surprised at how ALL the animals in British prison farms are looked after by prisoners. Often this is the first time they have come into contact with various types of livestock and they take their welfare very seriously. They (the prisoners) take great pride in their achievements and none more so than when they win an award at a County Show. There are many 'ordinary' farms that will not achieve their high standards and often they acquire skills they never dreamt of possessing and are encouraged to get qualifications which often lead to employment on release. Please don't always read the 'bad' press. Jx
Space Chick
A good point Jackie. I was talking about the show in work, being concerned about the chickens welfare, and a friend of mine said she used to work in a prison and they looked after pigs, she said they were the most cared for pigs she'd ever seen. A lot of prisoners really missed their own pets and so loved having the pigs around. I felt very ashamed of myself for being prejudiced against the prisoners
jackiepoppies
Hi Debs, please don't feel It's not always a case of missing their own pets. Some prisoners have never owned a pet and amaze themselves when they become involved with another living creature whose welfare they put before their own There are times when they feel almost embarrassed by it and can't believe it DOES NOT ruin their street cred Jx
Saronne
what a lot of bother for a few tiny morsels of meat, hardly worth all that effort was it! Those chickens in the prison were in very long grass, shouldn't Hugh have warned them about impacted crops? I thought the very same thing - HFW should've said something.
