School Chicks - Hatched!

Recommended Posts

Thanks everyone :D

They've been out in the eglu for the first time today and didn't really know what to do  They're back inside though now with the heat lamp only on at night.

I think I'm worrying for no reason but they seem a bit thin to me, I can feel their breast bone, but its not sharp so not too bad.

Their feeder is always full and ditto with the water (they're still on ACV), but I can't get them to eat it

That is unusual....mine eat their own body weight daily it seems. So did my last lot.

Are they pooing?

Yep, some of them are a bit dodgy (curry/runny) but I don't know who  or why really?

They are eating it, but not as much as I'd like them to, may get some mealworms for more protein.

What I did a few times yesterday was to take the food out for 5 minutes, and they all ran over interested and ate, so I might just keep tricking them that way :lol:!

Update:

The chicks are doing fine now and are in their (green eglu) in the garden.

When they first saw the glug they were scared of it, but they're drinking out of it fine now :D

Matilda and Theodore have been free ranging around the garden and don't seem to have noticed them - Theodore won't get too close to the chicks though

Still don't know if Blondey is a boy or a girl

There's a video of them here:

They're going back into school in the (green eglu) on Thursday and it'll be interesting to see what people think now they're bigger

 You noticed the lawn.

The eglu was on the right next to the fence, but they ruined that grass so I moved them over. So then I was going to mow the lawns, did the first few strips and it started chugging and just stopped  I checked the petrol, started it again and it did it again ... so no, I'll try again tomorrow though

They are looking lovely Lewis :D

I think its really funny when you are filming the white one and one of the speckled ones darts down the outside of the Eglu, that really made me laugh

Thats Pox

It was the first time I let them 'free range' and I think she realised she has wings because after that she was running and launching herself into the air so it looked like she was bouncing along the grass

Chickvic said they all look like boys aswell

They are autosexing and I thought we had 3 girls and 1 boy when they hatched and that they just had big combs for 8 weeks :? You can tell Fry is a lighter colour than the other 3 if you look closely and the girls have startings of crests.

*runs to look for chick pictures*

I hope they're 3 butch girls and hopefully Blondey is a girl too

I've had a look at the chick photos and Fry has always been lighter than the other 3, so hopefully they are just butch girls

I'd not thought about their combs before, just thought it was in the breed and just assumed they were girls because of the autosexing  they are really big though :(

What does anyone think about the chick pictures? or was I too hopeful?

I'll have to wait and see.

Sorry Lewis, looking at those pics and the ones on page 3 of this topic I would say they are all boys, the girls should have quite clearly defined stripes and the boys have the dot on the head - and all of yours have the dot :(

The fact that their adult plumage is coming through very grey makes me more sure of them being boys but then I am not a CCL expert!

I have to admit that when I first saw your chicks I thought all the Legbars were boys. Even for boys though their markings were not brilliant. I found that with my Dorkings, they weren't 100% Dorking because they were the blue egg laying crossbreeds, but their markings weren't as clearly defined as they should be for an autosexing breed probably because it's been diluted. I think I had one girl and two boys. I never got to find out if I was right because she was one of the ones lost to coccidiosis :(

There's no doubting now that yours are boys. Girls would have salmon breasts and be a lot browner than your light lads.
