My 5 year old is in reception and they are going on a school trip to a local petting farm on Wednesday. We have been asked that packed lunches are to be provided which is the norm but instead of them taking their normal lunchboxes with them, that they take their lunches in carrier bags so that everything can be thrown away I'm not happy.

 

(a) If they have visits from a school think of the amount of rubbish getting dumped on them to dispose of; and

 

(b) I feel the kids need to take responsibility for their own property.

 

What is the point of me banging on about recycling if the school (who I feel is supposed to set an example) can't be bothered to send the kinds or someone back to the coach with a few lunchboxes.

 

I know they are 4-5 year olds but if they can't be responsbile for their own lunchbox then they are too young to go on a school trip.

I agree - I've just had the same issue with mine going on a trip, he's in year 1. It's ridiculous!

It's a daily source of annoyance to me, the amount of litter at a school I visit every day - most of it INSIDE the school .

DS went on a school trip on Friday and also had to take his packed lunch in a bag. He is in yr 5. When i asked why they couldn't take normal lunchboxes, i was told it was because the coach wouldn't be staying there and the children couldn't carry them around all day

How on earth did we ever manage on school trips!! - we always had to carry our lunchboxes.......

 

Perhaps the school should consider purchasing a supply of paper carriers for school trips? - not a perfect solution but better than normal carriers.

Or can they not use cloth bags (the sort that fold up into a little pouch)?

I'm going out on a trip to Swanwick Nature Reserve near Southampton with DD's class on Tuesday & they are all on a mission to take a lunch with the least amount of waste in it...be it packaging or food. I'm not sure if we will have to carry our own lunch packs around with us or if the coach will stay within the reserve, but I will try & be organised & freeze our drinks so the food will stay at a reasonable temperature !

I read this with great interest as I took my class out on a farm trip last week and it was normal lunch boxes. Our school feels that if a child doesn't eat lunch then the remains are put back in the box so the parents can see what they have/have not eaten. In a plastic carrier bag they could just throw away what they didn't eat!
