Where did you get your run???

Recommended Posts

Hiya,

Currently our ladies are down at the house end of the garden, but they have dug up every last bit of ground and currently we have dust flying all over the place - it is getting ridiculous, hence I am giving up my veggie patch mid season (not happy) and the ladies are going to have to move up there. Of course now they are moving to an area which is going to need an enclosed pen (difficult to explain but it's all to do with the layout of the garden). so I wanted to know where is a good place to buy a decent enclosed pen for three lovely ladies to live?

Any ideas??? Please :eh:

Sounds like you need a Walk-In-Run (WIR). OH wanted me to construct some raised beds for her veg patch. With a little cunning design she now has three lovely beds, each covering exactly the same area as she had before with the regular beds, and I left myself with enough room for a WIR - result, we have lots of lovely veg to eat this summer and the chooks have a lovely new run - we're all happy :D.

Edited to add a better picture of the three raised beds!

We made ours. You can get a 30m roll of weldmesh from hills of devon for as cheap as 38quid, wood from B&Q say 40/50 and free slabs from freecycle. The most expensive thing we found was the roof but you don't have to have a roof on your run.

Thanks Yolky :D Your run looks far more sturdy than mine though

CW the wire is 1 inch square however I have also added fine chicken wire below the bar (about a third of the way up) to keep out small rodents, the weldmesh also extends roght down so the bottom third has two layers of wire as the weldmesh is important for strength

You can get wire with one inch by half inch holes but that is more pricey

It is quite sturdy Tasha. In the gales back in the winter the whole thing got flipped over in the wind, we couldn't believe it as it is so heavy. Luckily the girls didn't get hurt (they were just asleep in their upturned eglu) but the roof is still cracked in places, it still keeps them 95% dry though so we haven't replaced it yet as it was expensive!

I went onto ebay last week and searched for Aviary Panels.

This company were really helpful

Item number: 150326771376

tyesgardening@btinternet.com or by tel on 07885688372

Give them a call to tell them what you want, they were really helpful and helped me put together the relevant number of panels/roof panels, door panel and solid back panels for our 9x6x6 run.Placed our order on Friday and the panels were delivered yesterday - guess what we will be doing this weekend!

Only problem is that we planned to trim back one of our large shrubs to make room for the WIR but discovered we have some resident pigeons nesting - maybe we will have to wait until the babies leave home before we put the run in its finals position.

Thank you everyone, you all have such excellent runs - feeling my girls are living in poverty conditions now :oops: but then remembered that at the very least they are clean, dry, have a lot of room and they are spoilt rotten (I actually sat outside shelling peas for them earlier?? )

Anyhoo, on the basis that I already have a long list of DIY jobs for my DH and no chance of them being done any time soon (currently our bath taps are brass and sink taps are silver - not sure what the delay is there, figured it was best not to ask!) so I have ordered a new run for the girls from Averies 4 U, delivery due on the 22nd July and I can't wait. On the down side they are moving into my veggie patch so I now have to see what plants I can save and move into pots - looks like I have a busy few weekends coming up. So glad I have my girls in the garden for company :D
