I've just put the Ancona & Sussex in the brooder to give it some peace in the incubator to gain some strength. It's got a blue Silkie that's just hatched for company with another Sussex on the way. It does seem weak so I've left it in there and if there's no change later will make it some shoes. I've offered it water but it wasn't really interested yet. Sadly the other two SS that had pipped were both dead in their shells last night. The first one didn't surprise me really, I thought the Ancona had more than likely pecked at the shell rather than it's inhabitant pipped and when I opened it I was right, it wasn't quite ready to come out. The second one was very upsetting because it was alive at 6pm, I could see it breathing through the hole but at 7.30pm it was dead. So I'm full of what ifs. If I'd helped it sooner it would've been ok. So near yet so far. I've put the Silkie & Faverolle in the brooder this morning. The Faverolle has a plaster holding his legs in the right position and he manages to get about by shuffling. I couldn't find my tape this morning so I'm off to buy more to make it some shoes. The plasters on it's legs are helping it's legs stay in the correct position, and as you can see one foot is fine with nice straight toes, so I've made a shoe for the wonky foot. It seems to be getting about ok, more a series of lurches forwards but it gets to where it wants to, has eaten, had a small drink and is now asleep under the electric hen. Since I put the plasters on it can stand up, it's certainly more upright than it was. Hopefully it'll gain in strength over the weekend. Anybody know how long all the plasters & shoe should be left on for? And I thought splayed legs affected both legs, why is this only on one? Arrival number 5, a Speckled Sussex. I never knew they had faint black stripes The other four: You can almost see the looks of disgust on the faces of the Silkie and Ancona at the shoe! The splayed legged chick that we raised for friends during half term had one leg that was much more splayed than the other. All your other chicks are looking great, well done! I really wish I didn't have to rely on rubbish Ebay eggs going through the post, I don't have much joy with them. And that's 11 Houdan eggs I've incubated now and still no chicks. So the grand total this time seems to be one Ancona, one blue Silkie, one Salmon Faverolle and two Speckled Sussex I've just changed the dressings on Faverolles legs and it's doing brilliantly. When I took them off it could stand up properly with all legs and toes in the correct position Walking was tricky, it kept falling over but I guess once all the paraphenalia comes off for good it'll soon learn. I've put fresh plasters and a new shoe on to keep up the good work. Hopefully in a day or so I can leave them off for good. It's drinking but not too keen on eating chick crumb so I'm hard boiling some eggs and will try it on some of that mashed up. Sorry to read the hatch rate wasn't very high for you. I really am coming to the conclusion that E-bay eggs are 'pot luck', there's just too many unknowns and uncontrollable aspects. I've just changed the dressings on Faverolles legs and it's doing brilliantly. That is good news. There's no harm in keeping him/her strapped up for a good while. Thats what I've done, as then at least you can find a reputable breeder with set prices rather than an auction. I'd say leave the legs taped up for a few more days just to make sure everything is set in place because they can look ok so but aren't strong enough for another day or two . Griffin Posted July 5, 2009 Author Share Posted July 5, 2009 It really is uncomfortable for him though He's very noisy and unsettled sometimes, I think just through tiredness because he can't get comfy under the electric hen to sleep. The other chicks flomp down on their bellies but he can't because of the position of his legs so he sleeps on his side and keeps fidgeting. I hand rear kittens for Cats Protection and the first few days are always the hardest for them, they scream alot, are difficult to feed and I know they just want to curl up and die but I force them to carry on because I know after a few days of hardship they can look forward to a long and happy life and I think that's just the way he's feeling at the moment.
