The Dogmother
Our lovely forum friend Louise pointed this out to me, she's not able to access the forum these days, so has asked me to post it for her. http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/headlines/4477552.Fowl_play_is_all_the_/
Chucky Mama
Great article but I am suprised at him saying "They will live on your food s"Ooops, word censored!"s, which is also a recycling issue.” Wont he get into trouble for that?
The Dogmother
I don't think that DEFRA will be too keen. I had to advise a friend the other day (thinking of getting hens) that they couldn't live on just s"Ooops, word censored!"s as they'd not lay unless they had the right balance of grains and nutrients
Patricia W
OOh - I didn't know about Cuckoowood Farm, Freeland, - not far from me. I must investigate
Happy-Mama
great article. I was going to ask about the food s"Ooops, word censored!"s thing as wasnt sure I don't have any chickens myself but remembered feeding my grandads ones with chicken feed I am really tempted to get some chickens when we move house I guess the biggest problem is what to do with them if we go on holiday... The Dogmother
The DEFRA guidelines are that they may not be fed kitchen waste, although many people take the decision to disregard that in their own homes. WE have to be careful not to recommend it on the forum, but can recount our own personal experiences There was a thread about this not so long ago, and someone with a clearer brain might be able to find it. *retires to sofa with bowl*
Patricia W
Jen Jen If the worry you have about finding someone to look after them in the holidays is stopping you go ahead - don't let it! You'll be amazed at how many people nearby you will somehow come out of the woodwork as either chicken keepers themselves OR happy to look after them while you're away in return for eggs. Look in the chicken sitters section too. Tricia
Happy-Mama
Hi Tricia, yes that is the main reason for not getting any chickens we are moving house in a couple of months (still waiting to get a date) so will have to see what it's like there as won't know anyone in the area at all, which is a little daunting but I am very much looking forward to it all

TAJ
I saw there was a chap selling chickens mentioned in the advert near Witney - I googled his details: Cuckoowood Farm Ltd Commercial strain layers average 300+ eggs per year. Point of lay birds £11 each In lay birds £9.50 each Minimum order 5 birds Collection only Breeds: Lowman Brown, Columbian Blacktail Contact Information John Treble-Parker Cuckoowood Farm Eynsham Road Freeland Oxfordshire OX29 8AD Tel: 01993 883436 Email: jtjtp@aol.com Looks like a good price for POL - I wonder whether the 'in lay' birds are the ones he is getting rid of after a year though - if so they should be cheaper. Happy-Mama
Was just telling OH that maybe we could take turns chicken sitting if someone else had chickens, he made this face and asked if a new baby, dog and rabbit wasnt enough lol... though to be honest if we could manage them I think he would love to have chickens too
Ms Marple
Hi Jen Jen. There are quite a few Scottish Omleteers, ANH, Feemcg, Ali-s (I think - cottage by the castle Ali) and a few more - just not sure who is where. Put out a post looking for Scottish Omleteers I am sure they will reply.
