My blue marran has started making a lot of noise in the mornings. She doesnt just talk - she screeches for Wales! And it goes on and on. She gets particularly cross when there is someone else in the nesting box and I have had to start taking her into the house until the other girls have finished laying, before putting her back in the cube. She quietens down after lunch. I know the neighbours are not particularly impressed (to say the least), and I am worried that they will make a formal compliant to the council.

 

Can anyone suggest anything that may help? I know I may have to rehome her - but i'll try anything to avoid that. Thanks for reading...

How many hens do you have? could you rig up a cat carrier as an extra nest box maybe?

I have six hens altogether. Yes, that's a good idea about the cat carrier. I'd been putting her in one in the house - but I could try setting it up in the cube instead. MC.

I have four ladies in my cube and we often have a que for the egg laying facilities

With Brandy and Saffy moving in there in the very near future too

 

I have used a small cat carrier within the walk-in run and Fizz seems to love it!

 

I have also seen someone (i assume on here) put an old casserole dish onto the roosting bars of the cube filled with bedding and her girls used that to lay in also.

Mine sometimes get noisy when a nestbox queue forms.

 

I have the "ceramic oven dish nestbox"........

 

 

I pop it on the roosting bars in the morning and take it out late afternoon. They use it (sometimes in preference to the normal eglu nestbox).

 

Alternatively, you can threaten your noisy hen....... "use the oven dish nestbox or I'll resurect it's proper use......!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I have put cat baskets into the WIR to ease the congestion when laying begins.

one of our girls positively crows, and makes a terrible racket,,,sweetcorn is the only remedy that works (fresh or from tin)..the girls own poultry corn is not enough..

 

I only ahve an eglu and have three times found the chickens sitting on top of each other in a stack...laying at the same time....v odd..
