missuscluck Posted July 27, 2009 Share Posted July 27, 2009 I have been saying I would do it for years and always chicken out I am a member of the Cheshire Beekeepers and mrcluck always enters some honey. This year he is entering the light honey class and a frame for extraction in a glass case. There is a Honey confectionery class so Im giving it a whirl. I spent the whole afternoon making fudge yesterday and if I never see a piece of fudge again it wont be too soon. The first batch burnt at the bottom of the pan so I sieved it to get the black bits out. Put it in the fridge to set and it was too runny so tried to re boil it and then re set it but this time it was too hard Did a dash to the shops for more stuff and started from scratch and the second batch is lovley I have questioned my sanity yesterday whilst sieving fudge. I really have got better things to do Hubby sieves his show honey through old tights to ensure it is totaly clear. Its all a bit barmy really Also have made a Honey Date and Walnut cake, 6 Honey biscuits and Honey flapjacks. They have to be deliverd to the show by lunch tommorow for judging tommorow afternoon. missuscluck Posted July 27, 2009 Author Share Posted July 27, 2009 Heehee I got really grrrrrrrrr with the fudge. Happy with batch number two. I have a box full of reject fudge in the fridge now. Its kind of harder than it should be and tastes very sugary. If anyone wants some, come on over and help yourselves. I have boxed up the show goodies and have put a post it note on them saying 'DO NOT EAT' my son hoovers up anything edilble at an alarming rate. I could well get up in the morning to some crumbs. missuscluck Posted July 28, 2009 Author Share Posted July 28, 2009 James has a steward pass as he is helping on the Cheshire beekeeping stand and for my trouble of entering 4 classes I have been given a free pass to get in so Im well chuffed. Josh, my son is helping on the car park with the Scouts so he gets in free too. Amy is helping with St Johns ambulance and Katie is at a Sports event so she is not comming. we all get in for nowt!!! James has taken my entrys down this morning for judging this afternoon. Ill let you know how I get on. I think the competition is stiff. Im up against ladys who have entered time and time again. The recipie ingrediants are set in stone but the method is vauge so it leaves some room for your own interpretation. Im not sure what is expected so I might be way off the mark. Exiting though. The Stratford Association has a cake recipe which has to be made to the exact recipe and has been handed down for years and years.....it is almost impossible to make a decent cake from it, I don't know why they don't change it I hope yours went well............waiting for news.......... My son was covered in mud from head to toe from the car park. They were helping to push cars out at the end. Anyway on to the important bit... James got a third place for his frame for extraction. Here it is... We didnt know that show frames have to be on brand new frames Ours was an old one with blow torch marks on so we got third because the honey content was so good. Had it been on a new frame we would have got a higher placing. Never mind, we know for next time. I got third for my cake and a highly commended for my fudge and biscuits. Didnt get anything for the flapjacks though, which of them all I thought were the best. Just goes to show what I know The trick to the flapjacks and biscuits seems to be thin, crispy and a bit overdone. Personally I prefer plump and juicy. The winning ones seemed to be a bit more this way. The other thing I have learnt today is that when you cut the honey cake in half, the honey leaves a ring around the outside edge. Mine did this which is why I was placed. I was told it was a really close call as the top 3 were all just as good. Here is my cake... and here are our winning certificates. If you've got any left, I can get rid of them for you, I mean, no-one else is going to want them are they so I'm doing you a favour! That's what friends are for, no need to thank me.
