Chooks Aloud
My hubby is building me a hen house and he is unsure whether it is okay to use preserved (tanalised) timber or if this poses any risks to the chooks? Any advise please.
Jools
It should be fine as a lot of companies use it now for their hen houses. I would make sure it's smooth though (i.e. sanded) and not the rough sort used for fencing - you don't want them to get splinters now do you ! ubereglu
Preserved timber is what we used to make the hen coop my hens used to live in. It's better as you don't have to treat it with wood preserve which can be harmful to the chickens.

Any advise please. We have just finished building our hen hotel and we only used tanalised timber - the girls do not peck it at all so i wouldnt hesitate about using it if i were you. Hope this helps
Chooks Aloud
Thanks everyone. Emma, did you use sanded or non-sanded wood? Have you got any pictures?
ubereglu
Weused sanded wood, it wasn't that sanded though. Just enough sanding to get rid off the splinters.
theherd123
Thanks everyone. Emma, did you use sanded or non-sanded wood? Have you got any pictures? Hi Chooks, the main support posts were sanded but the noggins and gravel boards were not. http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4703 This link should hopefully take you to the hen hotel - its at the bottom of the page! Have a look at the other runs too - thats where i got my inspiration from
