Picky Chickens - Dust bath photos

Recommended Posts

When I got my chickens I bought a black plastic trug for my chickens to use as a dust bath! But they never went in it!

So, thinking that maybe they were not happy with the colour... yesterday, I bought a nice new purple one to match the cube!

FiFi was in it straight away! Frolicking and rolling about!

KiKi was getting a little frustrated at having to wait her turn!

SANY0054.jpg

In the end they all had a go!

Apart from MiMi... who watched from the step, as usual! :?

Hi,

Sorry if I appear a bit thick, i'm new to this, but what is in the dust bath. Is it just fine mud?

Joanne :?:

Mine is mainly play sand, with a little bit of fine soil, a large scoop of bird grit, a small scoop of mixed shell and a hand full of diatom.

Where did you find a purple trug ? I have only managed to find a blue one that had been in the garden centre for years so instead i bought them a pink litter tray and some really posh bird sand from a pet shop but they didn't take any notice of it except for pecking the odd bug ouf it. I have a lilac eglu - do you really think they like certain colours :)

Also was the trug one of those big high ones that you have lowered into the ground and filled up high or was it one of the shallow ones?

I got mine from Decathlon the sports place... they have a horse riding section, the trugs are good coz they are nice an shallow!

Here is there website http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/ although they don't seem to have the trugs online, although you could ring them or see if there is a branch locally... my guess is a lot of horsey suppliers will have them!

They even have funky coloured rakes!

I bought a matching set of lime green cat litter tray , poop scoop & feed scoop from pets at home , all from under a fiver. :)

KFC, what breed are your birds and what age ?, still waiting to buy my first chickens and thought yours looked lovely.

did you use a small or large one? I've been looking on this site

http://www.containerama.com/index.php?target=categories&category_id=36

and the small ones are only £3.99, large are £7.99.

I think the small one is good if you only have a few chickens... some folk have the larger ones so a few of them can bathe at the same time.

Mine only fits one... maybe two if they were feeling particularly friendly!

Mine have a big pink, shallow trug....

th_MOV02637.jpg

and a selection of red and yellow cat litter trays as their dustbaths, but they do love a deep purple trug and a large terracotta pot which used to house a beautiful lily..and of course the collection of "ankle breakers" which they develop themselves across the lawn

In the trug/trays they love a layer of weedy topsoil - especially good if we are going out! - or a mix of play sand, compost, soil, wood ash, anything fine and dry really, with a liberal dose of redmite powder and/or Diatom.

KiFi and CiCi are, 24wk old, Miss Pepperpots that Omlet supplied! They are great! Only one of them laying so far but she has laid an egg every day for the past 12 days or so!

FiFi is the white Amber Star... she is 19wks

MiMi, the smallest one, is my Lavender Araucana... she is 17 wks. She should lay a green egg!

They all have great natures... there have been no major squabbles... certainly no blood or feather loss! MiMi is very shy though and hardly strays from the cube ladder (unless they are free-ranging!)

just a quick one, where in the run do you put your dustbath? mine is in the eglu run under the shade, obviously to stop it getting wet, been in there 3 weeks now and no attention, does it have to be out in the light or under cover?

I have a cube... so mine is under that to keep it dry! It does get the sun though... when the angle is right

Great pictures KFC your ladies look soooo content. :D

Thank you!

I'll be happier when MiMi is a little bigger and more confident... and when they are all laying!

Surely CiCi is due by now! KiKi had been laying for almost two weeks now and CiCi is the bigger of the two!

I looked at the containerama place and hubby just ordered me a big and small shallow tub trug and the lids to go over the top. The only thing was they only had purple of one and soft purple of the other so i hope the girlies like them. Not sure what i might use the smaller one for but thought it might come in handy.

Thanks for that :D
