We only bought the tree last month from the garden centre and it was already loaded with fruit so they must have grown it indoors for them to be ripe already? what do you think, should we harvest them now? Guest
a few of them have dropped, shall I put them in the fridge until they're all ready do you think or put them straight in the brandy and just keep adding more as and when?

I would leave it until you have a decent amount, then do them all at once. I look like I am getting a good haul again this year, so its Bramble jelly again for us Yours are quite early - mine won't be ready for another month or so........ bronze
Poet yours still look quite light. You may find they go a darker red. Bit like cherries Ours are nowhere near ready we seem to be so behind this year. ~No blackberries or anything yet
Valkyrie
OH went for a walk last week and found a crab apple tree - he asked the owner if he would mind if he had some when they were ready. The man said "have as many as you want and if you know anyone else that wants them they are welcome to have them too". So he went off today for his walkabout and now the kitchen smells delightful with the aroma of cooked apples (I was going to leave it at delightful but thought it read like the kitchen smelt nice now that OH has gone out )! Mrs Frugal
Poet, a really easy way to check to see if they are ripe is to cut them in half and see if the pips have turned or are starting to turn brown. If not, they aren't ready. My John Downie won't be ready for another month yet. The fruits go a gorgeous reddy orange when they are ripe.
