Guest
Hi I have a very old but heavy duty chain harrow and its got in a real knot in places..I am debating as to skip it(has a great tow chain on it which I will try to remove) but any ideas or is it like a puzzle! Shame as I say its really well made but I just spent ages trying to sort it out & have probably made it worse!! Any ideas not sure whether to get a small mounted harrow instead? thanks indie
Alis girls
Again showing my ignorance - what is a chain harrow? cue for everyone to admit they didnt know either
Guest
http://chainharrows.co.uk/medium_chain_harrows.html have put a link on but I drag it behind a quad bike to break up clumps of mud and dethatch and also can use it to break up manure (it sort of levels the ground) It is heavy and metal and has got all twisted up etc I think I may have to skip it..was trying to salvage it..a bit like undoing wool balls but with metal Any suggestions?? indie

Happy chickens!
Didn't know about them either, looks like an instrument of torture to me - perhaps for using on gym kit steeling car thieves!
Lewis
I know what a harrow is! They have a couple at the farm, I don't know what to suggest, could you try hanging it up and sort it that way? Can you take bits of the chain off, so dismantle it and start again. I know one at the farm has bale twine sorting it out but I don't know why. Before skipping it see if you can get it fixed/bits replaced.
Gamebird
It does seem a shame to skip it. If it is in otherwise good working order it's worth trying to sort it out. It's probably got turned inside out in some places which is a bit of a pain. Our harrow gets in a twist but it's easier to untangle with two people and maybe a bit of oil to help the chains slide more easily. Good luck. Guest
Thanks for the replies I tried dragging it one way yesterday then tipped it over to try toget the tines the other way.. Hanging it up woud be an idea but it is so heavy(i have quad not tractor otherwise could be an option) It is very thick prongs so my farmer friend suggested s"Ooops, word censored!"ping it for metal & getting a new one! its a shame as its so heavy and great for sorting out the ground but part of its got into a big jumble! I may take off the big chain and ring before s"Ooops, word censored!"ping. Friends going to lend me theirs and they suggest in future I roll it up when I am not using it(rather than just leaving it in the corner of a field!! But thank you just thought a miracle could be done on it! indie
Lewis
As silly as it sounds, do your friends have a tractor with their harrow that you could borrow to hang yours up + get it sorted out?
Guest
Um My friend is my broth in law..he has a tractor and its him who told me to use his chain harrow..I was going to get him to sort it all out for me ...I will have one more go and will try to oil it as suggested..and wear some gloves as it is heavy(thats why I really like it) Am trying not to buy one ..this one is old and so well built..I will have a go at un knotting it thanks for all the advice will let you know how I get on indie
